Promising chemistry of the characters and imaginative fusion of costume historical drama set in the late Joseon era, Moonshine is about to be one of your favorite parts each week!
Historical dramas hit differently. Maybe it is because seeing the actors in costumes brings so much charm and vibrancy. Perhaps it is because of the impeccable cinematography. Maybe it’s both! In fact, there are so many wonderful things about K-dramas with historical settings. What is not to admire with historical costume dramas? from the world-building, the mood and tone, and the characterization of royalty characters?
With that said, KBS 2TV’s new Monday-Tuesday drama Moonshine, will take you aboard the exhilarating ride to the late Joseon period to witness the characters’ shenanigans revolving around love, banned alcohol, and family.
Inventive Plot Premise
In detail, even the title of the series has a rich background. Kim A-Rok, the writer of Moonshine, disclosed that the poetic and sentimental title was inspired by a poem by Joseon’s King Yeongjo era poet Lee Jeong-jeong.
The series’ writer stated that,
“‘When the flowers bloom, I think of the moon, when the moon is bright, I think of alcohol, when the moon is bright, I think of flowers. When the moon is bright, I think of friends. Do you want to get drunk with friends below?’ I felt that the flow of thoughts from flowers blooming in spring to alcohol and friends is the same as our drama.”
Besides that, the drama’s premise does not stray away from the actual events and occurrences during the Joseon period in Hanyang, now known as Seoul. Moreover, the production team only injected their creativity to bring to life these stories during the prohibition period of Joseon.
Writer Kim A-Rok said,
“It was always the fearless youth who took the lead at important moments in history. They say they don’t like what the world tells them to do, and they say they will do it when they say they shouldn’t. I hope that it will be a drama where you can have an exciting adventure together, how your youth can cross the line and break taboos.”
What is more, despite the fact that Moonshine is an integration of historical drama, writer Kim A-Rok attempted to narrate the stories of the people of that period stating,
“There are records that there were hundreds of people who discreetly brewed and consumed alcohol and forced into exile when King Yeongjo implemented an alcohol prohibition.” Many records from this time period have been cited. I attempted to depict life in a chaotic era as realistically as possible. I’d be pleased if viewers came away thinking, ‘I believe people really lived like this at the time.'”
Promising Main Characters
The story of Moonshine dwells on the lives of the four youthful characters causing a ruckus one after the other. These are namely: The principled detective who pursues taboo breakers, Nam-yeong (Yoo Seung Ho), Kang Ro (Lee Hyeri), the breadwinner of a poor aristocrat family—who secretly brews alcohol for a living, Lee-pyo (Byeon Woo Seok), an alcoholic prince who hides his identity to roam the streets freely, and Ae Jin (Kang Mi Na) an obstinate only daughter of a noble family, who is willing to risk her life for love.
For that reason, avid K-drama watchers are expecting good things from the series. Seeing how Director Hwang In Hyuk and Writer Kim A-rok bridge the lives of these characters heightened the expectations of fans. Most especially because these characters are portrayed by some of today’s sought-after Korean actors and actresses.
Additionally, just seeing the recent stills and teasers would make anyone look forward to the alluring portrayal of the charming set of cast.
The cast members also claim that they had a great time filming Moonshine. They enjoyed each other’s company so much that in a written interview Yoo Seung Ho gave a peak at a bromance worth checking for.
“I worked well with Woo-seok. Even on set, he’s my older brother, but he treats me like a friend.”
