Through the Darkness Plot Recap
During the 1990s, a series of killings troubled the citizens of Seoul because of the brutal attacks of an unknown murderer. Aware of the American F.B.I, Gook Yoon-Soo (Jin Seon Kyu) wanted to form a team that can track down these killers.
Detectives only rely upon the initial pieces of evidence and mistook an innocent man as the suspect. However, Song Ha-Young (Kim Nam Gil) believes that the suspect is not the real killer. Aware of the traits of Ha-Young, Yoon-Soo recruited him as a Behavioral Analyst to catch the real culprit.
Even though the police don’t recognize their team yet, Ha-young, Yoon-Soo, and their statistical analyst Woo-Joo continued in doing their jobs until the Behavioral Analysis Team has become an asset to the whole Seoul Metropolitan Police.
Through the Darkness Highlights
Ha-Young’s Deep Empathy
When Ha-Young was still a little boy, he fell into a river and saw a dead woman floating. He’s not scared of the woman; he thought that she might feel alone. Ha-Young is an empath and is highly attuned to the feelings of the people around him.
After becoming a detective, he always checks the bereaved families and empathized with them. He may remain calm on the outside, but he has a soft heart toward the families that are left behind. When Ha-Young accepted the offer of becoming a criminal profiler, his thoughts became occupied with how the mind of these killers works.
There also came a time when he cannot digest all the stories of the murderers anymore. Just like other people, Ha-Young’s emotional baggage overflowed. He thought that he wants to quit his job, but in the end, his desire to help the bereaved family burned brighter.
Stories of the Murderers
In the series, there are a total of five murderers that the Behavioral Analysis Team caught. When Ha-Young interviewed them, they shared the same stories of how they had a traumatic childhood. Some of them were bullied and physically abused when they were a child.
Ha-Young and Yoon-Soo also interviewed cellmates that committed hideous crimes. They retell their motives and how they feel while doing the crime.
Some criminals kill because it pleases them to see the face of their dying victim.
Some of them are narcissists and crave a perfect murder, and most of them are psychopaths that don’t feel any grief or remorse.
Through the Darkness Series Musings
Through The Darkness delineates the hard work done by Forensic Psychologists that are worth commending. Their job is not easy. Just like Ha-Young who examines the behavior and minds of these killers, it takes a lot of guts to talk to someone who killed many people.
Truth be told, each episode might be too wordy, but there’s a motivating element in looking forward to each case. Viewers saw how Ha-Young interrogates the suspects and confesses on their own.
Moreover, he delves into their personal lives to understand their psyche. It’s proven that childhood plays a vital role in how an individual would act and think when they grow up.
Notably, the drama also focused on the grief of the families that are left behind. Sometimes people are too focused on the victim and forget about the feelings and deep sadness of the bereaved families. This is also one of the reasons why Ha-Young continued his profession, he wanted to help these families to seek justice and peace.
Yoon Tae-goo as the one and only female detective in the drama is also worth praising. Her strong personality and sense of justice fit her job.
We can also see how other police officers discriminate against her because she’s a woman. She proves that being a woman didn’t hinder her to catch serial murderers.
Overall, this drama is easy to love. The vague possibility hinted at the end of the last episode of a possible sequel is also worth it.
Ha-Young warned another serial killer that hasn’t been caught yet and, hopefully, the Behavioral Analysis Team can do the job again.
