The Golden Spoon Opening Week Story
Realizing early that life is not fair, Lee Seung-cheon (Yook Sung Jae) juggles part-time work and studies at a prestigious school in Seoul. He would do anything for money at the expense of humiliating himself in front of his rich classmates who are also bullies.
Helping them out with homework and errands, he ends up helping his richest classmate Hwang Tae-yong (Lee Jong Won). The latter is under constant pressure owing to his father who expects a lot from him. Thus, it was a relief to have Seung-cheon help him with the reports his father gave him.
One day, Seung-cheon acquires a KRW 30,000 golden spoon from a grandma vendor who said that it can alter the fate of the owner. He was told that if he eats at the house of the person he wants to change parents thrice, their parents will be switched.
“Use your chances wisely to prove yourself because you may not always be given another chance.”
Unfortunately, Tae-yong’s father discovers who has been helping his son with the reports. He orders to clean up the mess with Seung-cheon, so the latter was framed to have extorted money from Tae-young based on the money transfers sent to him for the reports he helped him with.
Consequently, Seung-cheon is placed on the brink of being expelled. Begging for consideration, Tae-yong’s mother under her husband’s order refused the request.
At night, Seung-cheon and Tae-yong meet where the former leads the latter to make a confession that will prove he is innocent. After recording it, they fight to retrieve Seung-cheon’s phone with the recording. It leads to Seung-cheon falling into a lake, but an image of the golden spoon pushed him to not give up.
Desperate to survive, Seung-cheon rushes to Hwang’s mansion. He asks CEO Hwang for a meal as he only needs one more meal for the condition set by the grandmother who sold the spoon for its magic to manifest.
Magically, his fate really changed and they switched parents.
The Golden Spoon Opening Week Musings
Successfully pitching why Seung-cheon deserves that magical chance to turn his life better, The Golden Spoon cleverly paves options for the story to expand well. Neatly limning the direction of the narrative, the character portrayals are palpably projected, both by the young and old cast.
Viewers can easily sympathize with the lead hero’s plight and look forward to how he will take the three chances given to him to switch his parents back.
Correspondingly, this yields an interesting route since we can anticipate how Seung-chan as Tae-yong utilizes his newly-acquired life to help his real poor life once he is done with the 30-day period first chance given to him.
Whether he will drag it to the second chance condition of a year or the third chance condition of 10 years raise curiosity even more.
Accordingly, the signature depiction of a poor but loving family versus a rich but cold family was also put forward in the launch week. It emphasizes the irony of how the wealthy hopes to emancipate themselves from a toxic life whereas the underprivileged think that money can solve all their problems.
Nicely concocted, the drama in this new series spurs an excitement that is not taxing to watch. Interestingly, the hero-centric narrative is shaping to be its core charm.
