The Judge From Hell Series Quick Recap
A demon receives a punishment to possess the body of a human judge and send unrepentant criminals to hell. It might be an easy mission on her end. But not with our detective male lead getting in her way.
The Judge From Hell Series Highlights and Musings
Marking Park Shin Hye’s first time playing a bad-ass character, it was palpable since the beginning we were up for a crazy ride, for better or worse. But Park Shin-hye’s stunning acting and how deep into character she was got us hooked pretty quickly. Paired with a gripping story and a great cast down to the secondary characters and the guest appearances, every week we got charmed in different ways. It was especially thoughtful of the drama to include everyone in the ending credits and pay homage to all the characters.
As a demon out of hell fish out of water, life among the humans was quite boring for our heroine Kang Bit-na (Park Shin Hye) except for when she went on a shopping spree, of course. But it all changed after coming across our detective male lead, Han Da-on (Kim Jae Young). From having him killed based on a misunderstanding, getting annoyed by how he kept following her around, trying to get his attention, joining hands together and finally sacrificing her life for him before getting miraculously revived. That is one love story for the books.
Along her journey, Bit-na started to feel emotions and get humanized. Which is a disaster for a demon because, once caught, there is no way out. But I guess Bit-na was one lucky demon because she got another chance after catching a runaway high-ranking demon. Still, the most intriguing part was when Bit-na had to choose between completing her mission and returning to hell yet breaking the hearts of the people she grew to care about, or sacrificing herself in order to set things right.
Going with the latter, Bit-na faces a tragic fate. But it is this exact choice that got her salvaged when one kind-hearted angel dropped by hell to revive her. Speaking of angels, watching the demon and angel bickering was one of my favorite parts. And Demon Park Shin-hye vs. Angel Kim Young-ok was a treat to watch.
The last episode had many callbacks to the premiere week, marking how living among humans has affected Bit-na significantly. But deep in her core, she is the same charming demon (with a penchant for drinking cola and crumbling the can afterward) we have come to love. Fans might have mixed feelings about the open ending. Nevertheless, it was satisfying in terms of tying the loose ends and giving Bit-na, or more precisely, Demon Justitia, the choice to continue her life as a human or go back to hell and become Demon Bael’s heir.
Normally, I would be rooting for Justitia to stay with Da-on. But something inside me wants her to go back to hell and pursue her mission to punish criminals. The drama leaves it to us to wonder which path Justitia will choose, but I guess she would settle to go back to hell. Perhaps, the most remarkable thing the drama did is remain entertaining from start to finish and we are fine with whichever choice Justitia makes.
To sum up, The Judge From Hell was a refreshing watch that focused more on being fun that some parts might not make sense. Still, it had us looking forward to Fridays and Saturdays every week to check up on our charming demon and see what she was up to this time. And if it were up to me, I would inaugurate it as the Fantasy of the Year.
