A marriage ensnared in secrets is coming up in Netflix series The Trunk starring Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin!
When a mysterious trunk washes up on the shore, it unveils an unusual, hidden world of marriage entanglements and secrets. This secret trunk becomes the catalyst for a story that explores the shifting foundations of marriage in a society where commitment has become more fragile. As divorce rates rise and the choice to remain single becomes more accepted, the institution of marriage is no longer the steadfast social norm it once was.
Against this backdrop, The Trunk introduces us to In-ji (played by Seo Hyun Jin), an employee at a highly confidential marriage agency offering customized spouse services. In a world where love and companionship can be bought and tailored, In-ji’s agency provides clients with spouses who look and act precisely as desired—though for a limited time.
In-ji is assigned to a new, challenging case: to pose as the one-year contract wife of Jeong-won (Gong Yoo), a wealthy music producer and heir to an aristocratic family. Jeong-won expects a docile, AI-like woman who fits his exact preferences. But In-ji turns out to be the opposite: she’s strong-willed, unexpected, and unwilling to blend into the box her client has imagined. As the two begin their contract marriage, Jeong-won’s carefully curated life starts to unravel. To make things even more complicated, In-ji discovers that Jeong-won’s ex-wife was the one who arranged this entire “marriage” through the secret service—hinting at hidden motives and lingering feelings.
The Trunk delves into profound questions: What if you could order your “ideal” partner, crafted to meet every desire, down to their appearance, personality, and mannerisms? This marriage, however, is strictly contractual, lasting only a year. Once the time is up, your perfect spouse vanishes from your life, leaving only memories of the relationship you shared. Knowing the impermanence, would you still sign up for this “secret marriage service”? Could such a temporary union spark real emotions, or would it only serve as a fleeting fantasy?
As the story unfolds, In-ji and Jeong-won’s relationship becomes more complicated, marked by moments of conflict, intrigue, and even moments of unanticipated closeness. Both characters grapple with their pasts, ambitions, and the buried emotions that surface as they live together. Jeong-won, expecting control and predictability, finds himself drawn to the very unpredictability that In-ji brings into his world. In-ji, in turn, begins to question her own values, wondering if this staged marriage will leave her with more than a paycheck. Together, they explore the blurred lines between duty and desire, scripted behavior and true affection, obligation and freedom.
With a stunning cast, a story brimming with intrigue, and a plot that challenges our ideas of love and connection, The Trunk promises to be a drama filled with suspense, complex emotions, and plenty of unexpected twists. The secrets embedded in this “marriage service” will drive the story forward, keeping viewers hooked as Jeong-won and In-ji navigate the thin line between fantasy and reality.
The Trunk premieres on November 29, only on Netflix.
