INTERVIEW: Seo Kang Joon Shares Why He Picked “Undercover High School” for Post-Military Drama Comeback

Seo Kang Joon is back and ready for action in MBC’s Undercover High School!

Premiering on the 21st, Undercover High School follows a National Intelligence Service agent who goes undercover as a high school student to track down missing gold bars that once belonged to Emperor Gojong.

Seo Kang Joon takes on the role of Jung Hae-sung, a top agent assigned to this unusual mission. Hae-sung is not only cool and collected under pressure but also meticulous and strategic – everything you’d expect from a seasoned spy. However, his mission takes an unexpected turn as he navigates the ups and downs of high school life.

Explaining why he chose the drama, Seo Kang-joon shared, “What appealed to me was the mix of genres—comedy, action, human drama, and crime. I thought it was a great project because, underneath the cheerful comedy, there’s a deeper message.

He also opened up about his preparation for the character of Jung Hae-sung, who, while appearing warm and passionate, carries a deep sense of loneliness.

I trained at an action school to properly portray the action scenes as an NIS agent. But I also wanted to dive into Hae-sung’s character more deeply, so I focused on understanding his narrative and emotions, thinking about what kind of person he is,” Seo Kang-joon explained.

Describing his character further, he said, “Hae-sung tends to handle his own pain privately, instead of sharing it with others. He may seem like he lives a controlled life, but he’s also a free spirit. Although he’s always been alone, his time at the school helps him understand the feeling of togetherness.

On Chemistry with Co-Stars

Seo Kang-joon spoke highly of his chemistry with his co-stars, especially Jin Ki-joo, who plays his counterpart. “When Jin Ki-joo faces challenges with the script or her character, she has this incredible ability to resolve them with her unique charm. She’s an honest actress, and depending on the energy I give her, she reveals new sides of herself, which made working with her really enjoyable,” he shared. He also noted the strong bond with the rest of the cast, particularly the students portraying Byungmun High School. “During breaks, we often discussed acting, and I was reminded of how dedicated and sincere they are about their craft.

Concluding, Seo Kang-joon expressed his excitement for the drama’s release. “It’s been a while since I was discharged from the military, and I’m thrilled to return with a new project. I’m more excited than nervous. Undercover High School is something you can enjoy lightheartedly, but it also brings emotional depth and resonance within that enjoyment. Please look forward to it.”

Undercover High School will premiere on February 21st at 9:50 PM on MBC.
