The main characters’ elaborate performances, superb modern and ancient time concept integration, and surprising narrative twists are what makes this series good.
Writer Chi Feng Chien weaves mystery, spirituality, love, morality, faith, madness, culture, and environmental awareness into one story—that is Rainless Love in a Godless Land. And although this IQIYI original Taiwanese drama only has 13 episodes, it effectively delivered a post-apocalyptic romance story rich in cultural influences from the Amis tribe of Taiwan.
Not only is this a must-watch for viewers who want something different, but this is also an excellent series for people who love dramas about spirituality and apocalypse.

Rainless Love in a Godless Land Quick Plot Recap
The one omnipotent God of the Gods, Kakarayan, no longer wants to bless the environmental crises stricken world. Thus, before the last rain falls on Earth, all the deities will return to Pinokayan (The Heaven Realm for Gods).
However, an ordinary human girl unintentionally disrupts their retreat preparations, leading the world to shift against its expected outcome, as shown in the Reflection of Time (God’s oracle of the future).
As the gods leave the world they once adored one by one, the human girl, “Hsieh Tien Ti,” realizes that she and her guardian angel—who also is Kakarayan’s chosen messenger on Earth, both have the power to change her future.
Hsieh Tien Ti works for a travel agency called “Mountain Travel.” To illustrate, she is a very superstitious woman who believes and reveres the Kawas sincerely due to her grandmother’s teachings. After witnessing her sikawasay grandmother—a shaman that connects humans to God and eliminates disasters, she is deeply enamored with the spirits. She wishes to be a sikawasay that heals people herself.
But unfortunately, tragedy awaits Hsieh Tien Ti. Unintentionally she will unravel more about the Kawas (Deities) created and blessed by Kakarayan. Moreover, her work-life gets disrupted, and beliefs waver as she discovers more and more about Kakarayan and the Kawas.
What is more, O’rad, the Deity of Rain and Kakarayan’s messenger, will be there for her through it all. A love story between a human and a God blossoms amid the incidents and revelations before doomsday.
Rainless Love in a Godless Land Peak Points
Compelling Incorporation Of Indigenous Narratives
Director Hong Zi Peng, Writer Cheng Feng Chien, and the whole production team did a fantastic job bringing to life the compelling mythologies of the Amis Tribe.
In fact, the various folklores where the characters are inspired from and that were incorporated in each episode are splendid. Because of that, viewers can have a better comprehension of the narrative. Not to mention it enriches the plot making it unique.
More importantly, this brings good representation to the Indigenous tribes of Taiwan. Their heritage is honored and creatively presented to viewers worldwide. It is indeed great to see dramas that are culturally inclusive.
Depiction Of Environmental Crises
Apocalyptic dramas are abundant not just in Asian drama but also in Western and other foreign dramas. But ironically, most people do not take proper action after watching the series or movies.
Even if extreme environmental problems are the root cause of doomsday in most stories, most of the time, viewers remain ignorant and are not enlightened with how significant and alarming the premise and message of what they watched are.
What is admirable in this series is how they depicted pollution, depletion of natural resources, and mass destruction of nature. By doing so, this series is a call-to-action to viewers to open their eyes and start contributing to preserving and conserving nature before it is too late.
Justifiable And Refreshing Characterization Of Antagonists
Additionally, as modernity shapes the fast-paced contemporary world, viewership evolves. Notably, more than creativity, morals, and principles are the viewer’s basis of a series’ essence and effectivity.
On that note, viewers are now more analytical and critical in consuming entertainment. It is evident that today’s viewers relate more and want more villains with justified characterizations.
People of this generation prefer antagonists they could come to terms with. Mainly someone with an understandable stance. And in most cases, antagonists take on the role of the bad guy ( but are actually just people who get lost in the process of trying to save something).
It is evident that this is the approach that the writer is trying to peg for here in Rainless Love in a Godless Land. It is commendable, even if it could use some more work.
At least the plot twist about the two antagonistic characters is genuinely surprising, and the justification of their acts is well-written.
Mainly, kudos to Alice Ko’s convincing portrayal as the Cloud Goddess “Toem” and Joseph Cheng as both Fali the Wind God and Lemed the God of Dreams.
Rainless Love in a Godless Land Series Musings
Beautiful Opening Animations
The opening of each episode features different folktales, all of which are narrated using indigenous language. It is very captivating to watch. The animation style is unique and wonderful, and the stories are all amazingly weaved together to introduce the background of the characters in the story.
Moreover, it is great to see animation included in a series like this. This form of art and filmmaking will be appreciated more if given the right platforms with a wide reach to broader audiences. Not to mention integrating animations in series and films can enthrall people while delivering relevant themes and concepts.
Series’ Weak Links
Satisfying Ending
Despite the few noticeable loopholes, the series proves to have its flair and charms. For instance, it is delightful to see how the ending was wrapped up. It is refreshing to see how things turn out for everybody (even for the antagonistic characters.) Not just that but, almost everyone likes a sweet happy ending.
With a bit of much-needed communication between the characters, second chances, and realized dreams set in motion, things start to fall back into place to give the main characters—and even the side characters too, their own new beginnings and happy endings.
