iQIYI original drama series Bright Eyes in the Dark (他从火光中走来) aired its final episode last night (12 Oct).
The couple in the firefighter-themed C-drama, played by Johnny Huang (黄景瑜) and Zhang Jingyi (张婧仪), was met with much criticism from fans regarding their relationship. Zhang Jingyi chose to take a break from their relationship so as to better protect each other after she gained fame onscreen. After the break, the uncertainty of Johnny Huang’s safety as he voluntarily went on a mountain fire rescue became a hot topic for discussion.
Netizens also became concerned about whether or not the two managed to reunite, or if he actually sacrificed his life. He agitatedly repeated himself at least 10 times in a livestream, “I didn’t die!”, “I can’t die” and even shared his wish for the team to hurry up with the second season’s filming so that he can work with Zhang Jingyi again and allow the audience to catch the couple in action again soon.
Johnny Huang and Zhang Jingyi, who are both co-starring as leads together for the first time, interacted very naturally on and off screen. The audience got so excited by their sweet moments that they even went to count the number of times the two kissed and hugged in the drama, which was 17 and 25 times respectively.
Johnny Huang rescued Zhang Jingyi many times in the show, and he looked exceptionally dashing when he hugged her and walked out of the fire. When sharing his experience from the filming of the rescue scenes, he joked: “I’ve rescued her many times on screen but the most difficult part is that whenever she faints, she’ll always be on the floor. It gets really tiring especially when I am carrying dozens of kilograms of equipment on my back.”
Johnny Huang admitted that when the last day of filming approached, he felt immense sadness. “As soon as I entered the filming site that day, I felt really sad and couldn’t stop the tears when they started filming the panoramic shot,” he said. He even requested for the production crew to quickly let him co-star with Zhang Jingyi to produce a 12-episode sequel to Bright Eyes in the Dark, otherwise, the audience would become anxious waiting for it. Regarding the ending, Zhang Jingyi also said with a smile: “I believe the director will receive a lot of messages from the audience requesting a second season.”
Bright Eyes in the Dark tells the story of Johnny Huang who plays talented fire station commander Lin Luxiao, who is highly experienced in the firefighting field. He becomes the instructor for a reality show that conveys fire safety knowledge which Nan Chu (starring Zhang Jingyi), a passionate dancer, also happens to be a part of.
In a twist of fate, Lin Luxiao is the saviour Nan Chu has spent many years looking for. Upon realising this fact, the two forms a bond with each other.
