“Never Too Late” Sparks Motivating Message On Valuing Self-Worth

iQIYI’s latest Chinese drama Never Too Late (我的助理不简单) follows the pursuit of modern-day women as they attempt to find themselves while also realizing their dreams.

Taking on the lead role, Ava Wang (王子文) finds herself offending her supervisor by being overly straightforward, landing herself in a position back in the branch office back in her hometown.

Back in her hometown, she meets the overly “senior” intern Deng Jie (邓婕) as they both embark on a new phase in life. She also reunites with her first love, played by Bai Jingting (白敬亭), and the developments between the two become a hot topic of interest among audiences as they cannot wait to find out what happens next.

Ava Wang plays the interior designer, Jing Tian, who traveled to the north to pursue her career. With a successful career and a stable relationship, everything seems to go smoothly until she offends the higher-ups in her company and is relocated back to the branch office in her hometown.

Upon reaching home, she found out that her father had already rented her apartment to the 60-year-old “elderly” Wu Jing Fang (starring Deng Jie) and she was left with no choice but to share the house with her. Little did she know that this old lady would become her company’s new intern and her own personal assistant and after days of hanging out together and going through multiple obstacles together, the two had become close comrades.

Ava Wang plays a perfectionist in Never Too Late who has her own dreams and aspirations when it comes to her profession. Despite knowing how important the case is to her after her relocation, she showed no fear in rejecting her unreasonable client who asked for the design to be changed on multiple occasions.

In a fit of anger, her client terminated the contract with their company, to which her supervisor said she would be given a second chance if she just gave in to the client. With an attitude of her own, she left him with a snicker and resigned, embarking on her own business thereafter.

Not only did she encounter troubles in her work, but she had unexpectedly met with obstacles in her love life as well. After returning back to her homeplace, her boyfriend Fang Yuanqing (played by Jin Zehao 金泽灏) found themselves in a long-distance relationship and he even flew to Suzhou on her birthday to propose to her. What she didn’t expect was for him to cheat on her right after the two saw each other’s parents.

When she interrogated him on why he even proposed to her when he was already seeing someone else, he had the audacity to tell her, “I proposed because I love you, the other person is just my online friend and there’s nothing between us.”

However, she was unable to accept the reason and told him off: “I’ve never thought that this sentence could sound so disgusting. And as compared to physical infidelity, cheating mentally is even more unacceptable to me.

When he realized that she wasn’t buying his explanation, he instead pushed the blame on her and her strong personality that made him feel like he was being suffocated and he was just finding an escape and solace from other women, to which he then asked, “Don’t you think you’re at fault too?” which totally crushed her.

With her last words, “Cheating is cheating, stop finding excuses for your cowardly behavior“, she brought up a breakup and left without much hesitation. Her decisiveness attracted many compliments from netizens who felt that such scumbags shouldn’t be given a second chance and the intense plot kept the audience on their toes.

Bai Jingting who gained much popularity for his performance in Destined (长风渡) also made a special appearance in Never Too Late as Ava Wang’s first love, Zhou Yewen, who stayed in their hometown for the past few years and opened a stress relief center of his own.

He has also been the strongest supporter of the two entrepreneurs, Ava Wang and Deng Jie, rendering them with much help secretly and also providing them with a sense of security and comfort.

The devoted Zhou Yewen has never forgotten about Ava Wang and, after knowing that she had her marriage canceled, despite saying that a true gentleman would never find his ex, he can’t help having his attention following Ava Wang unintentionally and with the help of Ava Wang’s onscreen best friend, the two did not find it awkward when they finally reunited after their breakup.

The two often find themselves arguing with each other whenever they meet, adding much joy and fun to the entire plot and when Ava Wang heads to Bai Jingting’s stress relief center, she shows no mercy in treating him as her punching bag and even lays a punch on his face.

Not only did she not apologize or show empathy for her actions, but she even sarcastically said “You should definitely practice more, if you were to be beaten up by someone one day and fail to open your store for business, wouldn’t my membership go to waste?

As a result, Bai Jingting told her in anger, “There aren’t many customers of mine that are as tough and violent as you.” to which netizens couldn’t help but comment on how tough it must be to be a stress relief center’s boss and laughing over his plight.
