5 Reasons Why “Newtopia” Should Be Your Next Binge-Worthy K-Series

Director Yoon Sung-hyun, along with actors Park Jeong Min and Jisoo, recently gathered for a press conference in Seoul to introduce their upcoming series, Newtopia.

This exciting series follows Lee Jae-yoon (Park Jeong-min), a conscripted soldier, and his girlfriend Kang Young-joo (Jisoo), as they race to reunite amid a zombie-infested Seoul. Packed with action, romance, comedy, and much more, Newtopia is a must-watch when it drops on Prime Video on February 7. Here’s why you should be looking forward to it!

1. Top-Notch Talent

With an incredible cast and director behind it, Newtopia boasts top-tier talent. Park Jeong-min, an award-winning actor, is known for his remarkable versatility in films like Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet and Deliver Us from Evil. Meanwhile, Jisoo, a global star with a successful career in both acting and as a member of BLACKPINK, brings her undeniable charm and skill to the role of Young-joo. The chemistry between the two is palpable, as both actors have collaborated with director Yoon Sung-hyun before. Park Jeong-min shared his admiration for the director, noting that he debuted in Yoon’s Bleak Night and has always been grateful for their collaboration. Jisoo also expressed excitement to work with Park Jeong-min and Yoon Sung-hyun again, making their reunion even more special.

2. Unique Zombie Elements

Zombie fans are no strangers to the genre’s appeal, from hits like Train to Busan to Kingdom. But Newtopia promises a fresh take on the zombie narrative. Director Yoon Sung-hyun, a long-time zombie enthusiast, revealed that the series will incorporate zombie comedy and unique weaponry like umbrellas and American football gear to fight the undead. Both Park Jeong-min and Jisoo hinted that the zombies in Newtopia will be unlike anything we’ve seen before. Be ready to witness a twist on the familiar zombie tropes!

3. High-Energy Action

Get ready for action-packed sequences! Both lead actors dedicated themselves to intense stunt training for the series. Jisoo revealed that she learned to tumble forward at a stunt academy, making her ready for the action scenes. Park Jeong-min, on the other hand, experienced the physical toll of his role, as running in military boots led to plantar fasciitis—but he had a blast doing it. The actors also spoke about the challenges of filming in extreme weather while maintaining their character’s wardrobe, with Jisoo praised for having the best stamina among her co-stars. The action scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat.

4. A Fresh Take on the Zombie Genre

While Newtopia offers the elements fans love—action, humor, and the fight for survival—it also stands out in several ways. Director Yoon Sung-hyun aimed to differentiate this series from other zombie stories by adding a unique mix of colorful elements and humor, reminiscent of zombie works from the ’70s and ’80s. He even shifted the musical tone, originally planning for electronic music, but ultimately choosing a more playful, animation-inspired score to give the series a lighter, whimsical vibe. The blend of humor, action, and visual style makes Newtopia a refreshing addition to the genre.

5. A Heartfelt Love Story

At its core, Newtopia features a poignant love story between Jae-yoon and Young-joo, whose relationship is tested by the zombie apocalypse. Park Jeong-min described his character’s internal struggles about love and career, which get put into perspective when the world is turned upside down by the outbreak. Young-joo, who initially suggested a break from their relationship, finds herself rethinking her decisions as the disaster unfolds. Jisoo’s character comes to realize the depth of her love for Jae-yoon amid the chaos, and viewers will be rooting for them to overcome the obstacles standing in their way. Their love story adds a rich emotional layer to the action-packed plot.

Enjoy the thrills, romance, and humor of Newtopia as it drops weekly from February 7 to March 21 on Prime Video!
