On Portraying Kang Tae-mu
Looking back, Ahn Hyo Seop revealed not overthinking played well when he decided to play the role of Kang Tae-mu.
“I fell in love with the character for a short time and read it without any worries. That reason alone was enough. I wanted to be in these fun situations with Kang Tae-mu, and I also wanted to challenge myself with comedy.”
Acknowledging Kang Tae-mu appears to be an unrealistic character, his homework at that time was to work on bringing up the realistic side of Tae-mu. Along with that, he also emphasized Tae-mu’s distinct voice tone.
“I acted with the belief that if the viewers gradually became accustomed to Tae-mu’s tone of voice, his colorful charms would stand out better. I think the most important thing was that I believed in Kang Tae-mu and I believed in myself.”
Describing Kang Tae-mu’s biggest charm, Ahn Hyo Seop expressed that his inner boyish charms are what makes him interesting.
He expounds how his front appears cold and sharp like a normal urban man. But, deep inside, there is a boy who still can’t reconcile the pain from his past because he did not receive the love he deserves from his parents.
“That’s why Tae-mu started pursuing a perfect life to fill that empty space. He begins to find his true self as he meets Ha-ri, a character he has never seen anywhere else. Sometimes we have childish quarrels and sometimes we feel pure love. This point seems to be the most interesting and attractive approach while acting the role.”
Confessing any regret he could have after the series, Ahn Hyo Seop shared that it is a normal process. However, his disappointments are mainly how he could have made the scene fun or have done something better.
For him, it is important to not dwell on the regret since he was able to do his best for the sake of his fellow actors and the production staff.
Accordingly, he declared that playing Kang Tae-mu made him gain a lot of confidence. He also divulged that his similarity with Tae-mu is that he doesn’t open his heart to people very well.
On Delightful Synergy With Lead Cast
Ahn Hyo Seop has only warm words for fellow actors Kim Sejeong, Kim Min Kyu and Seol In Ah.
The happiness they shared while filming translated to the small screen because their pleasant interactions were genuine.
He shared how they were all caring people who compromise when necessary to achieve the best scenes possible. Moreover, they also had a lot of fun scenes coming from impromptu ideas.
Their unified passion made all of them driven to work hard for the series.
When asked about his favorite moment in Business Proposal, the actor adorably shared an anecdote of that scene.
“That would be when the Vice-Chairman (Lim Ki-Hong) made a bomb wine for Tae-Mu and the development team, who was at a dinner party without notice. In fact, it was a passing scene. But the performance of the senior I saw was really shocking. Everyone gave heartfelt and respectful applause and the atmosphere was really good. I thought, ‘How can a quick scene be expressed in such a colorful way?’ Later, I heard how he practiced drinking beer and shaking it in the bathroom at home. It’s a day I can’t forget because I received a great acting motivation.”
Filled with heart-fluttering moments, the series was loved by the audience owing to his on-screen love journey with Kim Sejeong.
He also mentioned that the “date scene” where it suddenly rained is another memorable part for him. Sharing a heartfelt kiss, he expounds the feeling of caring for each other at the spur of the moment was beautiful.
“I think it was possible that the warm scenes portrayed genuinely were able to permeate in the viewers’ mind, making it such a happy drama.”
On Navigating His Career Compass
Business Proposal continues to garner viewers’ attention and for a good reason. Regarding his overseas popularity, Ahn affirms how K-Drama content is getting more attention, but he was still surprised by the reception of international fans.
“I think that if any work contains sincerity, it can transcend differences and work for everyone. There were a lot of reactions from people around me, and each one of them left a deep impression. I looked through the writings about Business Proposal, even those that highlighted the shortcomings with gratitude. People have different preferences, it cannot suit everyone’s taste. Actually, the point where I feel its popularity is how even my old friends who don’t see my work often watched the series.”
Working on different roles in his previous works, Ahn Hyo Seop shared his insights about character transformation with wise words.
“Rather than feeling burdened, I thought that it was a fun and profound work that allowed me to get to know a new character, so I think I prepared with all my heart in every moment.”
In establishing himself as a reliable leading actor in his 20s, he commits to living the moment of every opportunity gifted to him.
“Instead of having a new goal because of further growth or increased interest, I am always thinking of the original motto of my life: ‘every moment, now, to do my best with sincerity’. I will continue to love this job in the future, so I want to take on various roles through many works. And regardless of the results and achievements, I wish that every moment as an actor makes me happy.”
Wrapping up the interview, the actor also shared of aspiring to work on a role that is broken or evil. Fortunately, he was also given a chance to wear a school uniform for his upcoming Netflix series, A Time Called You.
He also hopes to create an opportunity where he can meet his fans.
