C-Drama Review: “Falling Into Your Smile” Fascinates With Its Balanced E-Sports-Romance Story

A once-you-pop-you-can’t-stop series, it can reel a viewer to watch it on a binge. While romance and e-sports themed drama has seen a rise in C-Drama landscape, Falling Into Your Smile gravitates easily for its vibrant characters and engaging narrative.

The series narrates the story of a University fresh graduate Tong-yao (Cheng Xiao) who opted to pick a career she’s passionate about. Despite her mother’s objection, she signed a contract with a famous e-sports gaming company, ZGDX.

Falling Into Your Smile

As the first female professional gamer, she is driven to prove that women can also explore an industry known to be dominated by the male population. Moving to ZGDX’s dorm, she slowly but surely builds connections with her teammates. At the same time, she also learns the ropes of being a professional gamer.

With her new career, she also reconnects with her ex-boyfriend Jian Yang (Zhai Xiao Wen) who introduced gaming to her. He is also their team’s top competitor in the league. Determined to focus on her passion and career, she cuts Yang’s hope of getting back together.

However, her growing infatuation with their team captain Lu Sicheng (Xu Kai) keeps speeding up at a risky rate that might defy her initial vow of not going to commit in a workplace romance.

Falling Into Your Smile Mid-Series Peak Points + Musings

Falling Into Your Smile literally brought me back to my 20-ish drama fangirl self when I have top-notch stamina when binge-watching series. After watching a few C-Dramas exploring e-sports, I’m deeply impressed with the smooth integration of humor and romance in the series.

Having zero knowledge about the plot of this drama made me really happy for stumbling on such a captivating drama treat. It also scores the highest addictive level so far among all Asian dramas I saw this year. The amazingly blended romance and e-sports elements really helped the narrative to be engrossing.

It smartly maneuvers the romantic buildup while aligning to its set goal involving the e-sports backdrop of the story. Notably, the in-game fight scenes are also superbly delineated into the storytelling. It does not fall out of place and even aids the character development. Moreover, people who are not really into gaming can easily understand the rules of the game played in the series.

Additionally, the portrayals are really natural, that it felt like you are at the scene as an invisible spectator. When I say natural, if you are the type who hits people when you see a heart-fluttering scene, you better watch the series alone. I swear I’m scaring the people in our house because of my sudden laughs and squeals. *chuckles

The narrative pace also secures the viewers to stay all the way to the love goals in the depicted love stories as well as the championship dream of the team.

Tong Yao’s Life Lessons

Knowing no moderation with her brave and smart quips, Tong Yao is such a fascinating character. From explaining how Godzilla-ish grumpy women can get during their monthly period, to being clear about her dating decisions, she can also pitch a convincing argument of how youth should follow their heart in choosing a career.

More than that, she delivers a women-empowering story of embracing challenges while learning from the lessons of failures. She’s not afraid to speak her mind, unaffected by bad comments, and wants to be someone who is not a liability in the team.

Lu Sicheng’s Discovery of Unexpected Romance

Often being taunted by Tong Yao to be responsible for marrying her, the perky heroine’s mindless claims are likely to be fulfilled. We definitely can’t wait for him to stop her inadvertent “boys’ collecting” while they meet the captains of other teams, which gets in his nerves even when he doesn’t want to admit it.

Enamored by her charms, let’s hope a flashing sparkling LOVE VICTORY might soon appear for the lead pairing.

A Visual Cute Boys Buffet

Basking on rejuvenating visual treats from the e-sports team players featured in the series, ladies can just skip their spa treatment. You just need episode doses of the series and you’re good. Expecting bromance to emerge is also inescapable, not to mention the cute side love story, too.

Where The Story Heads To?

After 16 episodes, we are expecting love to fully blossom between Sicheng and Yao. An avalanche of saccharine moments is very much welcome as well as one-sided love stories to push Cheng-Yao couple to concede and claim their fated love.

Other than that, on the game side of the story, we can brace ourselves to a looming problem. Something that would most likely help seal the love deal between Smiling and Chessman while fortifying ZGDX’s teamwork.

Ultimately, the goal of the team to win the championship is also in motion. Definitely, a no easy task as they have to hurdle formidable opponents.

But for now, if you are hesitating to watch this series, please do not. I swear all the K-Drama disappointments I piled since the beginning of the year vanished because of this adorable series.
