PRESS CONFERENCE: “Call It Love” To Steer Healing Moments Albeit Its Revenge Narrative

Call It Love asserts that revenge can be translated as motivation to claim inner peace.

Disney+ original revenge-romance series Call It Love is about two people entwined with revenge but fell in love.

Attended by Lee Sung Kyoung, Kim Young Kwang, Sung Joon, Ahn Hee Yeon, Kim Ye Won and Director Lee Kwang Young; the online drama presentation of Call It Love looks forward to pragmatic moments that hold meaning to varied emotional pains of people.

Hosted by Park Kyung Lim, the lead stars and director share their insights about the drama which is slated to release on February 24.

Lead Stars Relay Insights About Their Characters

Taking pride in its well-written and ruminative script; Call It Love shared striking lines from the characters. The actors who brought life to the characters also reveal interesting details.

First, Kim Young Kwang describes his character Dong-jin as a lonely person who does not know how to deal with the scars deep inside him. His character’s line: “Someone told me that my back is cold and lonely” realistically supports Dong-jin’s loneliness.

Likewise, Lee Sung Kyoung elaborates that her character Woo-ju is scarred because someone took something from her. Coming from that pain, she wants to protect what’s hers moving forward.

You know my dream is to live rowdily.” Sung Joon details his character, Jun, as a responsible person. He wants this love to get from his family and is fond of Woo-ju.

Meanwhile, Min-young, portrayed by Ahn Hee Yeon can’t let go Dong-jin, her past love. Ahn conveys there’s a lot in her character that is vague.

Talented actress, Kim Ye Won looks forward to another scene-stealing role as Hye-sung. Her line: “A chance like this comes never again. Even your name is romantic. You know girls fall for the littlest thing” – says something about how she is cheerful when she deals with life and love. She’s also eager to find her true love.


A Solace For People To Live On

Conveying the profound message she hoped Call It Love would give, Director Lee relayed his thoughts about the series.

“I like the phrase that people live no matter what. Sometimes we feel like not wanting for tomorrow to come, but we live on. These people are plain joes and plain janes, and maybe little changes could help them. Someone can be an inflection point in one’s life. So, I hope that this show provides solace to the people who live on.”

Grateful for the excellent cast, the director also takes pride in the cast members’ great chemistry. Despite having different personalities, they worked well together. She also lauds how they were all committed to their roles.

Lastly, she also emphasized another resonating message of the drama.

“I don’t focus on the concept of revenge but of healing. The characters in the show they want to revenge. They were hurt. But they wake up the next day and carry on.with their lives. I want to send a message that we can all carry on with our lives.”

Character and Drama Preparations

Matching the emotional scenes of Call It Love, the series features Korea’s best artists that lent their voices to match the heart-wrenching scenes. A quick snippet of the soundtrack roster reveals striking songs that match the mood of the series.

Regarding the highlighted love story, Lee Sung Kyoung revealed she and Kim Young Kwang deliberately decided to have distance since they are real-life friends. She also confessed how emotionally draining the shooting of the drama was.

It matches the character stills displayed at the media conference which also delved more into the characters’ motivations.

“If you look at their glances, Woo-ju looks hostile while Dong-jin looks tired. As the story goes on, they will emotionally develop. I focus on the emotional portrayal. The director put a lot of trust. I had the creative freedom to bring the character to life.”

Echoing Lee’s remark, Kim confessed how he avoided Woo-ju so he can stay in character. He also limits interaction so he can understand Dong-jin’s pain to feel the loneliness.

Detailing his bond with Woo-ju, Sung-jun is her trusted friend that would stake his all for her.

“To the character Jun, it’s different when you are close to people, they can never be family. He feels responsible for Woo-ju like he has to go all-out to protect her.”

Meanwhile, Ahn Hee Yeon sheds light on her relationship with Dong-jin. She said, “Min-young is in the scene that she does not want to see. Dong-jin is her heartache but loves him despite it.”

Lastly, Kim Ye Won teases how her character would be in a heart-fluttering moment, but refuses to add more information about why she felt that way while sitting Kim’s character is unveiled in the scene.


Q & A with Onsite Media

Opening the floor for media questions, the lead stars further heighten expectations for their characters in Call It Love.

Lee Sung Kyoung praises Sung Joon for pulling off his character as she easily slides to her character and their friendly relationship. On that note, Sung Joon explained his focus when acting is making sure that the emotions of the scenes do not weigh him down.

Similarly, Ahn Hee Yeon whose character wants to renew love reveals conditioning herself right away to her character the moment she wakes up. She also mentions how Kim’s lonely back helped her tap into the emotions she needed.

Speaking about Sung Joon’s natural knack for comedy, Kim Ye Won praised him for being so natural that sometimes she succumbed to bloopers because of his antics.

When asked about the revenge plot that intends to draw empathy, the lead actors were asked how they funneled their emotions to their respective characters.

Ahn Hee Yeon replies her longing for love made her empathize with Min-young a lot. Kim Young Kwang expresses feeling a lump in his throat playing the role of Do-jin who was seeking the warmth that Woo-ju gave to him.

As the eldest in the family, Lee Sung Kyung relates to Woo-ju’s character who acts as the eldest owing to her maturity.

Meanwhile, Sung Joon sincerely shared that it was hard to understand Jun who seems to be overly kind. He adds that he feels like needing social validation, so that’s what he tried to fathom – what he lacks.

Lastly, Kim Ye Won tells how to a certain extent she can resonate with the character. But she had a hard time digesting Hye-sung’s ability to love and to break up easily.

Call It Love premieres on Disney+ on February 24!
