Nearing its premiere, Forecasting Love and Weather lead cast and director graced the drama presentation conveying filming stories and character details.
At the recent press conference, director Cha Young Hoon together with Park Min Young, Song Kang, Yoon Park, and Yura, share their thoughts and experiences in the latest series.
The drama follows the love and office stories of people working at the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
Apart from weather forecasting, it is a story about love and how the people of the KMA get to understand one another and grow together.
Acquainting viewers to the highly anticipated drama, Director Cha recounted how he and the creators crafted the story for Forecasting Love and Weather.
“I heard that screenwriter Sun Young actually thought of this premise a long long time ago. She researched the subject for over two years, and basically stayed at the KMA for 8 months to do her research and learn from the folks there. I heard she stayed late into the night for two months. When I was talking with her I felt that she found weather and a person’s life to be quite similar. It’s really hard tosee what’s coming for both. That’s what triggered her interest in the love and life of people who have to forecast weather, which is so hard to predict.”

An Exciting Script + Energetic Cast
Expressing his enthusiasm upon reading the script, Song Kang implies that it was very intriguing and hilarious, particularly the part he played as Lee Si-woo.
“I thought the premise of the KMA was very interesting and while I was reading the script I think it was very humorous. It was very funny in some parts so that’s why it was really attractive for me and my character Si-woo. He is really innocent and naive and kind of dorky. I think he resembles me to some extent that’s why I chose this series.”
Adorably quipping how she was looking forward to working with Song Kang, Park Min Young brightened the mood with how the cute packaging of her lead man was something that she did not expect.
“I had the first scene with him and he came to the set later than I did. Because of the COVID situations we sometimes experience delays. He came a few days later than was supposed to, and you know you expect Song Kang to be handsome and cute and everything, but there wasn’t the Song Kang I expected. I was like, ‘Where’s Kang? We have a scene together today’. And there he was with funky short hair showing only half of his eyes. So I said to director Cha, ‘You know I never talk about how I’d appear on screen but this is wrong. So many people are going to watch the show just to see Kang!’ So from then we opened up his short bangs to show more of his face. I want him to be handsome because I’m supposed to fall in love with him”
Grateful for the role she won through audition, Yura animatedly described her character.
“Yu-jin is a reporter but she spends most of her time at the KMA so I don’t think there were many scenes where she was reporting. She represents an ordinary young person in her twenties. She’s ordinary but not quite. She’s not cheery but she isn’t exactly dark. She was quite different from me. Sometimes she’s nice, when she’s pissed she can have a fit. It was a realistic, nothing-out-of-the-ordinary character so it was actually more challenging, and more special for me.”
Agreeing with her, Director Cha even shared a cute anecdote.
“Yura has a lot of energy. I talk to her for an hour and I got tired. She’s very unique, outside of the typical.”
Meanwhile, Yoon Park admits that every character in the series was pleasant except for his, and he intended to decline, but the director encouraged him to accept the challenge.
“I have to be frank right I don’t wanna lie. The three actors said that the script was fun and that applied to me too. Everyone was so nice except for my character Han Ki-joon. He is like the worst person ever so I really didn’t like him but they offered me hundreds of this character. I had a meeting with the director and then the direcor persuaded me that I should take this part.”
Challenges of the Characters
Focusing on the world of KMA people Park Min Young was drawn to the fresh concept. Her experience also made her more empathetic, if the weather forecast is wrong.
“First of all I never knew much about weather service. It was a fresh idea. Something that is new for me. It was difficult to learn terminologies to familiarize myself. I studied through documentaries for my character. There isn’t as much romance as you’d like in the show. Our show is more about the office, so the bits and pieces of romance that can be found may be even more heart-fluttering. I don’t think you should watch the show just for the romance, cause there’s the whole storyline and the personal growth of all the different characters.”
Noting one of the obstacles encountered during filming the drama, Song Kang, likewise, expresses the complexity of the terminologies, which were challenging to adapt to.
“And what was difficult was of terminology, it was really hard to get used to the terminologies. So, I watched a lot of documentaries and when I was watching the documentaries they themselves would also kind of stutter when saying out this terminology.”
Subsequently, Director Cha considers that the most arduous element for the actors is pronouncing the weather terms.
“This weather terminology is something that we have never ever heard of or spoken of in our whole life. That’s why this terminology can be very academic. There’s like some kind of weird name for a rain and it’s almost like a tongue twister so it was really difficult for the actors. We couldn’t just make up the terminology. We have to use the terminology that is there so we wanted to look professional and look like experts.”
Song Kang and Park Min Young’s Synergy
Considering herself fortunate to work with a great actor, Park Min Young believes that Song Kang has more to offer and that the two of them developed something new together. She also says that he carries a lot of potential for working with him.
“I’m lucky to work with a great actor. I thought he has more to show. So if I can work together with him, we could create something new. Maybe because I’m a little bit older or experienced. There’s a lot of potential working with him.”
Likewise, Song Kang regards the actress as a compassionate individual, and working with her motivates him to improve his preparation for the series.
“Even before we met, I was nervous because I saw her on TV when I was young. I think she’s the kind of person that digs deep. So when I was preparing, I thought that I should also think from multiple angles. And when we’re acting together and something is just not right, she would first ask me what I would do. I really appreciated that she was so considerate. Especially in romance scenes, I learned a lot, she gave tips on how to make the couple more affectionate. She would say “how about adding this here?”
Director Cha Young Hoon’s Reason For Casting The Promising Lead Stars
During the pre-production stage, director Cha thinks casting will be one of the most critical and challenging responsibilities.
Considering how tough it is for him to choose actors that are relatable to the characters, he finds it extremely impossible to foresee how the story will unfold.
“I think that actor itself each actor has their own energy that they display. I try to capture that energy that is displayed by each of actors like just Ha Kyung because she is a very successful professional character so she needs to be able to express that intelligence and I think that was something that we know was very good at.”
Accordingly, he emphasizes how much he trusted Park Min Young in portraying the role of Jin Ha Kyung, who oozes beauty and the way she falls in love, which will undoubtedly make viewers’ hearts flutter.
He also shared how Park’s title as rom-com goddess really resonates.
“Song Kang and I learned from Min-young because she’s the rom-com queen. We just followed what she said, and it made sense.”
On the other hand, director Cha discusses how well Song Kang fits his character and behaves on set.
“I think Song Kang and Si-woo are very innocent. They are very lively and playful but with Song Kang’s acting and when Si-woo’s forecasting the weather, they are very curious and professional. And, one moment later they forget that they are very elite people. Song Kang synchs to his character well. He is playful and naturally has a bright energy in him.”
