[Interview] Lee Do Hyun Triumphs in Leading His First Melodrama “Youth of May”

As “Youth of May” came to an end, Lee Do Hyun, who played Hwang Hee-Tae, successfully finished an emotional portrayal.

Written by Lee Kang and directed by Song Min Yeop, the drama portrayed a sad love affair in the 1980s between a medical student (Hee-Tae) and a nurse (Myung-Hee) who met during the pro-democracy period.

Lee Do Hyun’s in-depth acting gathered many favorable views. His sweet eyes, warm voice, and guitar performance made many viewers giggle.

It proved that he is worthy of being awarded as the Best New Actor at the recent 57th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Lee Do Hyun Conveyed Thoughts About “Youth of May”

The actor was immensely happy in filming, and it has been an honor to work with a great director, writer, filming staff, and amazing actors. 

These people helped him in his role as Hee-tae from the beginning until the end of the drama.

Furthermore, when the actor asked about what is the most difficult challenge that he faced while filming the drama, he said that living in the 1980s setting pushed him in doing better.

“The most delightful and difficult part was that acting a boy who seemed to exist in the 1980s. So whenever I thought about preparing and filming my work, I first thought, “What did they do in the 1980s?”

In terms of acting with different actors, Lee admits that he has a great relationship with Hwang Gi Nam (Oh Man Suk) who played his father.

The actor attained to act untroubled because he had an opportunity in working with him before. 

Moreover, Being a pure-looking character and keeping his love despite the harsh reality, he also shared his most favorite and memorable part in the film.

“All scenes are memorable, but if you pick one, it’s that time when Hee-tae met crossroads with Myung-hee at the end. I wonder what would have happened if I didn’t let go of my hands at that time, and I feel a lot of affection because it’s a sad scene.”

Many viewers felt the ache on this scene because it became the parting of two people who learned a lot from each other.

 


How Will Hee-tae be Remembered?

The actor said that the character of Hee-Tae will be remembered as someone who assures himself that everything will be okay.

 “You’re doing well, you’re living well. And I can do better,” is Hee-Tae’s mantra.

Having this kind of mantra helps to ease the burdensome feeling that an individual feels.

It may not solve everything, but it will be a one-step forward in making good decisions in life.

Hee-Tae’s principle is a good assurance not only on his character but everyone who faces different struggles in their daily lives.


Lee Do Hyun’s Message to the Fans

In the interview, he sincerely thanked the fans that supported and loved the drama.

“I would like to thank those who loved “The Youth of May.” It was a great help to know that you were immersed in it together and support, rebuke, and mourn for me.”

The actor was also hoping that the viewers will spread their wings and fly freely.

He also assured the fans, that this is not the last time that he will be seen again and expect that he will be better on his future projects.

“I will visit you once again with a good human being with acting skills that can develop further and be more immersed, thank you again for loving “The Youth of May.”

Many will miss the drama, but it didn’t fail in making the viewers realize the goodness of being a youth.
