Lee Hyun Wook

Remarriage & Desires lead star Lee Hyun Wook reveals he is grateful for taking the role and working with encouraging fellow actors.

In a recent interview for Remarriage and Desires, Lee Hyun Wook shares his experience working on the drama.

Remarriage & Desires tells the story of those who dream of moving up to upper-class society. They fulfill their dream by marrying a member of the “black rank”.

Netflix’s first ‘Red Flavor K-Makjang’ drama attracts attention. Within two days of its release, it climbed to No. 2 on Netflix in Korea and No. 8 in the global market.

Remarriage and Desires

Lee Hyun Wook takes on the role of Lee Hyung-ju, a man who stimulates the desires of all women. He gets entangled with Kim Hee Sun, who plays the main character, Seo Hye-seung, as well as Jin Yoo-hee (Jung Eugene) and Cha Seok-jin (Park Hoon).

In the previous drama Mine to ‘Remarriage & Desires,’ Lee Hyun Wook played an upper-class male character who pursues desire. He is creating the genre in a story where human instinct lives and breathes.

Playing the Role of Lee Hyung-Ju

Lee Hyun Wook shares his thoughts on playing the character who pursues passion in his previous work Mine.

“I played a lot of characters that express desire, but this time I had to control it. For example, when I felt a certain emotion, I reacted immediately before that, but this time it wasn’t. So, it was difficult. I had to act dry, and I expressed it with a lot of restraint. I had to do a good job of distributing energy in expressing emotions. In that respect, I tried to differentiate those characters.”

He took the project for having a fresh storyline and excitement as he played an intelligent character. He also said that since it is Netflix Original Series, it would offer new to international viewers.

Moreover, he also shares the similarities between himself and his character Lee Hyung-Ju

“We are similar when it comes to expressing our emotions. The difference, as you all know, is financial power.”

On Preparations For His Character

At the drama presentation, the director hinted at carefully watching Lee’s transformation.

“Because it’s a self-made character, I prepared it in a simple and casual way. I gave points to watches and cars. I avoided expensive clothes.  I tried to build a body. But it doesn’t make sense. I have a lot of money, but I have a good body. I tried to make a body with moderate exercise.”

While filming, he enjoys different filming locations, rides in a fancy car, and drives a yacht because his character is a chaebol.

“When I got off, I thought my ankle would break if I did it wrong. It looks gorgeous on the outside, but there is a feeling of discomfort in it. I can’t run. It was hard to feel the car’s performance properly. The yacht was driven throughout the filming. About 10 hours I guess. I didn’t know, but I got burns on my back.”

After that, he threw jokes that he did an excellent job of not being dead in the drama.

“I said that for fun. The most important thing when choosing a work is interest. The number one priority is whether you can have fun while acting. It’s good if you don’t die, but you have to die if necessary.”

Previously divulging how he liked the idea of the marriage information company, Lee Hyun Wook also expressed his takeaway from the series.

“I used to be negative about marriage. I thought that marriage is something other people do. If you get married, I want you to be someone you are comfortable with when you are together. If you have good emotional exchange and conversational skills, you can be together for a long time.”

On Having Great Chemistry With Fellow Actors

Lee Hyun Wook shares his gratitude for working with inspiring co-actors.

“I worked well with the seniors and had fun filming it. There were no difficulties at all. They are all actors who are really good at acting. There was no stimulating scene with Kim Hee Sun, but there was a conversation that said, ‘Even if it’s a melodrama, I can only do it emotionally without skinship’ I shared it with the director. I liked that direction.”

Meanwhile, he shares the fun experience of having a live broadcast with Kim Hee Sun.

“It was a very fresh experience. People who act are unfamiliar with live broadcasting. So, I was very nervous. Senior Kim Hee Sun gave a good lead with energy. I think the viewers were surprised and felt fresh. It was fun to go on a live broadcast and sell a drama.”

On the other hand, after asking about his acting, the actor expresses that he has never been satisfied with his acting. He also stated that he doesn’t think he will ever be happy with it, same for all actors.

The actor also describes that working with respected seniors like Kim Hee Sun is like a dream.

“It’s amazing to be acting with the seniors I’ve seen on TV. Every time I get a call or receive a message, I think it’s amazing.”

Finally, he divulges his aspiration as an actor and a person.

“As an actor, I have a desire for good work. I gave up my desire to be number one or to rise to a high position when I was young. I work harder to meet good works. As a person, I have fun I want to, but it’s hard. There are things I lost while acting. I think there is a desire to find my daily life.”
