Jeon Mi Do

Leaving a deep impression in her latest work, Jeon Mi Do delightfully shared anecdotes and insightful thoughts in her latest interview.

Praised for her role in Hospital Playlist, the talented actress adds another feather in her cap for her remarkable rendition of Jung Chan-young in Thirty Nine.

Truly her transition from theater work has gifted her with new career milestones as an actress.

Interestingly, not only did she receive praises in Thirty Nine. The friendships that she shared with Son Ye Jin and Kim Ji Hyun extend to real life just like their characters in the series.

On Thirty Nine‘s Memorable Friendship Trio

Expressing gratitude for Son Ye Jin’s guidance, she revealed how she led the mood of the team with her acting experience. Them sharing the same age range also propelled the evident synergy.

When asked about her thoughts on the last episode of Thirty Nine, the actress confessed that it also broke her heart.

She further relays how they weren’t able to tune in to the final episode because it coincided with Son Ye Jin’s wedding. Like an after-scene she and probably viewers would love to see, she narrates a touching moment she felt.

“I went into the bride’s waiting room, and Jihyun and I were both crying. It felt like we were marrying a friend we had been friends with since high school. When I saw him in a wedding dress, I was in tears. Chan-young in the play wants to send Mijo to marriage. It felt even more strange. Yejin said, ‘You must be crazy, why are you crying’.”

On Playing The Role of Chanyoung

In portraying the role of Chan-young, Jeon Mi Do is thankful that viewers resonate with her.

She conveys how the synergy among them was great. After making friends in the drama, she is happy that the work also gave her new friends.

When asked where she focused most in playing Chan-young, she naturally points to the idea of death as her character is bound to die in the story.

Another facet of her character that made such an impact is her love affair with Jin-seok, portrayed by Lee Mu Saeng.
She admitted the difficulty and concentrated on the emotions of the characters.

“I was worried about how the viewers would receive it. But in a way, I thought it was more human and realistic. It was not perfect and not cool, so the foolish side felt more realistic. I thought that it would be more sympathetic. It was difficult even for me to convince the relationship. It was still difficult to act with a clear right and wrong, but I tried to faithfully express what was written in the script.”

Revealing her favorite scene in Thirty Nine, Jeon Mi Do picked the scene when she was dragged by her friends to take her portrait.

“Chan-young took a portrait by herself and didn’t like it, so she told Mijo. She was brought to a botanical garden cafe. It wasn’t very dramatic, but the scene was really good. I liked that it was expressed in a way that is comforting. Also, the lines in the brunch scene were very good. ‘Quality over quantity. I think it’s the best words to describe a perfect life.”

On Takeaways from Thirty Nine

Speaking of memorable scenes, the obituary brunch event left a deep impression on the viewers. Jeon Mi Do remarked how the scene while filming has also made a lot of people cry.

Accordingly, she expressed doing the same thing Chan-young did if faced with the same predicament in real life.

“If I had some disease and my life was short, I thought that I would like to meet the people I like and say our final goodbyes. It would be meaningful.”

Emphasizing the importance of health checkups, she ran down the things she learned from the series.

“I thought I should have a health checkup. I haven’t made a reservation yet, but I think I’ll take a break now. And I’ve been thinking about the many relationships I’ve had. Now is the time to set a specific date and eat real food. The fact that I started moving into concrete actions was the biggest influence I received from the drama.”

Thirty Nine provided profound friendship lessons. Jeon Mi Do responds to the question of how she will be if a dear friend is confronted with having numbered days ahead,

“I couldn’t imagine it, but in fact, my close friends are married and live far away. If that happens, I think I’ll work less and move closer.”

Bringing life to such an amazing character, Jeon Mi Do also ponders the meaning of being 39 and what has since changed when she turned 40.

“Although it is thirty-nine, it is a bit too much to say that it is in its 30s, but it still feels like it is not full enough to be in its 40s. I still think I’m immature, but the way I think is changing. I feel humbled in the parts I have to accept and the parts I need to admit. Now that I’m forty, I came to realize who I am.”

On Her Future Plans

Noticing the streak of her successful shows, Jeon adorably admits she still gets confused about where the camera is when filming.

She also mentioned the support from Hospital Playlist family who diligently supported Thirty Nine by watching it.

When asked for her theater stage comeback, she replies her schedule might not work. So, for the time being, she is taking a break.

Conveying the kind of story she wants to work on, Jeon Mi Do hopes for a character with a different texture.

“Rather than choosing variously, it is a story that can be sympathized with. What kind of resonance or message can it give to people? I think I will focus on what I want to do and whether I feel attractive.”

She also wants to work with famed director Ahn Pan Suk (Something in the Rain, One Spring Night) if she will be given a chance.

Lastly, Jeon Mi Do communicates how she wants to be known as an actress.

“I want to be remembered as the person I appeared in. I don’t know what kind of character I will play in the future, but I want to be remembered as that character rather than Jeon Mi-do, and I want to become a person who admits that I am lacking as a person.”
