Six years after his debut, Jo Byung Gyu has presented a superb growth as an artist.
Since Who Are You: School 2015, he has gone through 70 projects. Among those are seven films and 16 dramas. It is by no means not an easy task for an actor in his 20’s.
Always eager to explore his depth as an actor, he did not hesitate to play small roles. From there, being noticed is inescapable leading to him landing supporting and main roles.
As part of the runaway hit Sky Castle, he followed it up with lingering impressions in portrayals he made in Arthdal Chronicles and Stove League. Recently, his starring role in The Uncanny Counter added another wonderful milestone for Jo Byung Gyu.
In a recent interview, the actor conveyed thoughts about his role in the drama. Marking a new viewership record in OCN’s growing list of well-loved series, The Uncanny Counter has already confirmed its second season.
Playing the role of So-mun, Jo Byung Gyu is a high-school student who injured his leg in an accident that also caused his parents’ death. He has become a counter, a modern-day grim reaper who round up the evil spirits wreaking havoc by possessing humans.
During the interview, Cho expressed the preparations of his first main role. From the little details in hair style and weight loss to how he can draw So Mun’s personality.
Confessing about the tremendous burden of playing the main character, he kept thinking about how to best express the character without losing the vibe of how he was pictured in the original webtoon. He shared losing weight and getting a perm for his hair.
“Since So Mun is a character from a fantasy manga, there must be a good harmony between the reality and the fantasy,” he said. Taking into consideration of its underdog theme, he also take note of how he presented So Mun’s character development.
Surpassing the 10% audience rating, The Uncanny Counter also recorded the highest viewership rating of 10.9% – both a first since OCN was launched.
With that, Jo Byung Gyu remarked that the feat reminded him of how the process might be difficult, but the reward is all but gratifying.
He considered the overall teamwork of the actors and production team led to the phenomenal result of the series. Praising his fellow actors, he reveled at the opportunity of working together with them.
Breakout Role
Undeniably, The Uncanny Counter sealed Jo Byung Gyu’s breakout performance. A special work for the hardworking actor. He also defined 2020 as an amazing year for him because of the series.
In particular, he was very affectionate about So Mun who braved his difficulties. More than his impressive physical strength, his kind heart and growing up as a good boy add flair to his character.
When Jo Byung Gyu looks back on his career in the future, The Uncanny Counter would encourage him in moments of exhaustion, loneliness and feeling down. His depiction of “cry baby hero” is both parodixical and resonating.
All the whole-hearted efforts to perform well in his chose roles ultimately made Jo Byung Gyu a reliable actor to bank on.
“To be honest, it’s like a miracle. I’m grateful that it went well miraculously. Still, the result wasn’t entirely my job. A good script came in at a good time, and all of my colleagues, seniors and juniors, directors, and staff provided help.”
Genuinely moving forward to the course he believes will work with him, he hopes to define 2021 as an “infinite challenge”. He does not know what his next work will be.
“Whether it’s acting or a role, I want to challenge a genre without limitations.”
