A Superior Day Opening Week Story
Firefighter paramedic Lee Ho-cheol (Jin Goo) is reliable on his job. When he helped an elderly resident in an apartment, he stumbles on a crime scene. However, the criminal subdues him by wounding his eyes. He even escapes unscathed.
That same killer is being tracked by his detective wife Jung-hye (Lim Hwa Young). Knowing how evil the serial murderer is, his wife advised him not to present himself as a witness. She is afraid the killer might retaliate since her husband has seen the culprit’s face.
After Ho-chul’s medical treatment, a reporter goes for a deceitful ambush interview putting Ho-chul’s face to the public’s attention. While waiting for when he can return to work, Ho-chul busies himself by being a house husband and fetching his daughter Soo-ah after her school.
True to the doctor’s assessment, Ho-chul still suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. The mental health condition manifested when a murder happened at the highly-secured apartment building they live in.
About to faint, he was held up by the next-door neighbor who has been teaching his daughter art lessons.
An Impossible Mission
Complaints have been thrown by the tenants to Kim Dong-ju, another resident who has also developed a friendship with Soo-ah.
With the new murder confirmed to be part of an ongoing serial murder case, Jung-hye and Ho-chul worry about their family.
On the morning of Soo-ah’s birthday, Ho-chul insists on walking her to the subway. However, he forgot something so he asked her to wait.
When he returns, Soo-ah can no longer be found. He finds her phone inside his pocket and realizes the man who bumped on him slipped it.
Chasing after his daughter’s abductor, Ho-chul receives another phone call. He assumes that it was part of the serial killing case and informs the caller that he does not remember the face of the killer.
The caller orders him to remember the face of the killer or his daughter will die in 24 hours.
A Superior Day Opening Episode Musings
Fast-paced and sprucely narrated, A Superior Day has established a fascinating groundwork on its first outing. The characters are introduced, the problem is raised – all the viewers have to anticipate is how the hero of the story can accomplish his mission.
If only we can tip him that he need not look far for the person he is looking for. Jin Goo and Lee Won Geun took the majority of the scenes in this episode with Ha Do Kwon appearing faintly.
But we can already feel the tension among the lead stars of the series. It is a good sign since the direction of the story would bank on their thrilling interactions.
Under extreme pressure, we can expect Ho-chul’s almost impossible journey to exhaust his memory so he can save his daughter. Why he was chosen to look after an infamous serial killer is another question we want to be answered soon.
Do note that the next seven episodes might be an exhausting ride for Ho-chul. Chances are that it would be the same fate for us viewers. On the horizon of this series is an outsmarting game with precarious life at stake.
