Chief Detective 1958 Opening Week Story

Diligent and determined, Park Young-han (Lee Je Hoon) is the pride of Hwangchun police for being able to pin down cow thieves. His hard work did not go unnoticed as he soon embarked on a new journey in Seoul to join a new team in Jongnam station.

Instead of countryside crimes, Young-han confronts the problematic barbaric reigned situations in Seoul. Recruited by team leader Yoo Dae-chun, their team is later joined by stubborn detective Kim Sang-soon (Lee Dong Hwi) who belongs to another team of Jongnam station which has been currying favors to the gangs of Seoul. Later, they are joined by Jo Kyung-hwan (Choi Woo Sung) who gang members struggle to defeat for his strong body plus smart and strategist Seo Ho-jung (Yoon Hyun Soo) who initially was also from another team.

Together, they aim to overturn the disappointing reputation of the police force as they make their way to obliterate gangs in Seoul.

Chief Detective 1958 Opening Week Musings

MBC’s new Friday-Saturday series delivers a promising retro investigation story that will appeal not just to old fans of the original work but also to the new generation and global audiences.

To feature a period of Korean history where barbarism was rampant, viewers can expect action-packed episodes. What’s distinctly established in the opening week is the layering of humor which I think would be sprinkled generously in the duration of the series.

Elaborately introduced, the lead characters of Chief Detective 1958 are up for hilarious and profound crime-busting adventures. We can also expect internal conflicts within the organization. It was surprising how tamed the treatment of corrupt officers as depicted in the launch week. Compared to how self-righteous the police officers are now depicted in modern-day crime series.

This aspect poses possible concerns to be resolved as the narrative progresses.

Portrayal-wise, we can never go wrong with Lee Je Hoon, adding Lee Dong Hwi, Choi Woo Sung and Yoon Hyun Soo; they can guarantee a perky and gratifying drama that we can look forward to every weekend.

Settling to their new team, viewers can anticipate crime problems to be tackled using old-school deduction skills and strategy. These add charm to the already gravitating premise of the series.

Chief Detective 1958 streams on Disney+ every Friday and Saturday.
