My Perfect Stranger Opening Week Story

Famous news anchor Yoon Hae-jun (Kim Dong Wook) stumbles on a car that can make anyone travel to the future or to the past. Having envisioned his retirement life, he gets the surprise of his life when he discovered the future, he dreams of won’t happen.

“Exactly a year from now, I will die in the year when I turn 35. That’s because the culprit who kills me is the real culprit of the serial murder case in Woojung-ri in 1987.”

His discovery leads Hae-jun to time travel to gather information to find the man who will kill him in the future. He also learns that his death is involved in a serial murder case that happened in 1987 at Woojung-ri.

Befriending the village people, he tips them on how their young people are going to face problems for getting high on super glue. Using the information he learned from his time voyages, he also secured a job post as a teacher at the village school.

“Have I ever imagined a world without my mom? When I say, Mom! No one in this world can answer to it now.”

Meanwhile, Baek Yoon-young an editor of a publishing company, goes to her usual day of tending to the needs of best-selling author, Go Mi-suk. She disregards her mother’s request to go home and celebrate her father’s birthday.

Instead, she gives her mother, Sun-ae, money to spend. Coincidentally, they meet at the mall, but Yoon-young ignores her when Go Mi-suk vocally expressed disdain to people craving for items on sale which includes Yoon-young’s mom.

Later, she sees her mom and they engage in a slight verbal spat. Little did she know that her last conversation with her mother would be a painful one.

When she decided to go to their house, she finds no sign of her mother. Then, she receives a call that her mother was found lifeless in her hometown, Woojung-ri.

Pleading for a chance to give her mother the love and care she deserves, fate sided with Yoon-young’s earnest wish. As she walks aimlessly into the village at present time, Hae-jun is also heading to the village in 1987.

Mysteriously, he entwines Yoon-young to the past.

“Have you ever realized how someone felt but it was too late? If only I realized it a little earlier. If only I realized it a little faster, it could’ve been different.”

Knowing her wish of getting a chance to meet her mother again was just granted, Yoon-young got rescued by Hae-jun when she followed 1987 Sun-ae who was coaxed by her bully classmates to go clubbing.

Sharing a house with Hae-jun, Yoon-young plans to change her mother’s fate. While Hae-jun works on fixing the car for them to return, he also met with the man purported to be the serial killer.

Glued to her mom, Yoon-young discovers her mom’s scribbled story is the first novel of Go Mi-suk. After warning 1987 Baek Hee-sub, her future father, to not involve himself with Sun-ae, she also rescues her from being bullied.

My Perfect Stranger

Listening to her mother’s agonizing story of how she’s allowing her friends to take advantage of her because they’re the only friends she has pains Yoon-young. It dawns on her how long her mother has been suffering feeling neglected and yet she also has become cold towards her.

Hae-jun returns home without Yoon-young. While fixing her bedding, he picks up a match that is a signature item in all the murders that happened in the village.

Keen to protect her mother, Yoon-young pleads with Hae-jun to let her stay in the village a little longer.

My Perfect Stranger Opening Week Musings

Neat and intriguing, My Perfect Stranger took a non-stingy route in providing connected clues of the past and present.

Pitching the guessing game on who the serial killer primarily drives the compelling narrative.

Yoon-young has her hands full of tasks. She intends to protect her mom who can’t seem to stand up for herself. By doing so, hopefully, she gets to chase after her novelist dream.

Moreover, how Sun-ae’s writing piece became Mi-suk’s first novel is also one story to be unraveled and whether Mi-suk has something to do with Sun-ae’s death at present time.

Now things will not be easy for Yoon-young and even Hae-jun. Once the serial killing commences in the village, as newcomers their identities are bound to be questioned.

This brings us to another point to watch in the series which is why Hae-jun was killed by the serial killer of Woojung-ri.

True to time-slip stories, the ripple effect of things that changed in the past is also expected to add flavor to the narrative.

What’s enthusing so far is how Kim Dong Wook and Jin Ki Joo established their characters well individually that you would gravitate to their separate stories and root for them to work together as well.

Will they prevent the serial killer who began wreaking havoc in 1987?

Solve the puzzle pieces from the past with Hae-jun and Yoon-young in My Perfect Stranger.
