K-Drama First Look: “Reflection of You” Exhibits Asymmetrical Lives Between Two Women’s Fate

Go Hyun Jung and Shin Hyun Been share a harmonious friendship that mysteriously deteriorates over time on Reflection of You.

JTBC’s latest series Reflection of You follows a successful painter and essayist that seemingly starts to fray after encountering a woman who inspired her to become who she is today. Hee-joo is doubtful whether her meeting with Gu Hae-won is mere coincidence or intentional in light of her daughter’s assault.

Reflection of You

Reflection of You Opening Week Story

Receiving a call from her daughter, Jung Hee-joo, who is outlining a new painting on her canvas, rushes to the emergency room. She further discovers her daughter was involved in a fight with her art teacher, which resulted in the redness and swelling on her right face.

When questioned about the incident, her daughter, Li-sa, remained silent. Meanwhile, Hee-joo confronts the teacher who assaulted her child, which escalated the situation.

Facing Gu Hae-won, Hee-joo began to notice a resemblance between her and her acquaintance, Hannah. While they were discussing calmly why she struck Li-sa with the book, Hae-won informs her that Li-sa did something wrong and should’ve apologized first.

However, Hee-joo loses her temper. She firmly smacks the papers in her face, demonstrating how she had harmed her daughter.

Considering the abuse inflicted on her by Hee-joo, Hae-won strangely smiles upon knowing that it was captured on a surveillance camera. Following that, Hee-joo’s efforts backfire on her when she was sued for Hae-won’s injuries.

Reflection of You

A Tale of Two Women

Then, Gu Hae-won visits Jung Hee-joo’s residence and apologizes on her knees for her behavior, especially the assault on her daughter. Likewise, she begs her pardon and informs her that she wishes to withdraw the lawsuit against her.

Settling the matter of Hae-won’s attack on her daughter, Hee-joo unquestionably rejects her apologies and drives her out of her house.

Hee-joo suddenly realizes she had not come to offer an apology. She unambiguously deems that Hae-won has an ulterior motive.

Inquiring about the reason for Li-sa’s incident, Hee-joo spoke with Gu Hae-won once more. Because her daughter was admitted to the hospital for the second time due to psychological trauma. She consequently asks as to why she lingered at the complex and met with Li-sa’s friend.

On the other hand, Hae-won explains while Li-sa was participating in the art class, she purchases someone else’s effort in submitting her work. That kind of action is not something to be blamed for. However, it is a different matter to show lack of respect for other people.

On their journey home, Hee-joo delves into a conversation with her daughter, implying that she may have caused a misunderstanding with her friend. But Li-sa firmly posits that what Hae-won told her was a lie. She then wishes for her mother to avoid another meeting with the woman.

Afterwards, Hee-joo and Hae-won separately prepare ahead of time for the grand art exhibit, unaware of who will show in the other room.

Following the dispute between the two women, what happens in the later episodes will evidently be a complicated and exciting story to witness.

Reflection of You Opening Week Musings

A melodrama series revolving around themes of betrayal and vengeance is not typically something I would like to watch. However, when I was in the middle of the drama’s premiere episodes, the plot surprisingly piques my interest.

Unfolding the ulterior motive of Gu Hae-won and disclosing the story behind what transpired between her and Hee-joo to explain why the warm relationship became frigid, is something that I look forward to in Reflection of You.

Similarly, the secret Hee-joo’s husband is hiding while traveling abroad and watching over the John Doe patient who turns out to be Gu Hae Won’s husband leads to a compelling narrative for the series.

Distinguishing which side is good and which is bad will surely be a source of anticipation for the viewers.

Obviously, resolving the accumulated questions requires a great deal of patience. And these will be revealed gradually as the series continues to release new episodes weekly.
