The Uncanny Counter 2

The Uncanny Counter 2 Opening Week Story

Kicking off The Uncanny Counter 2, the series opens with a kindergarten school bus driver who is possessed by an evil spirit and threatens the lives of the children onboard by driving carelessly.

Hana informs her fellow counters of the situation as she goes to stop the school bus. The counters appear one by one to handle the dangerous situation.

Finally, So-mun appears and saves the day. Ga Mo-tak’s co-workers in the police force are amazed that he is able to capture another criminal.

Meanwhile, the Counters are having a meeting in the Spirits Immigration Office, and they are complaining about their lack of members. But Jong-suk says he just wants to find the perfect member and avoid making mistakes. Then the members leave and continue their practice on psychokinesis skills.

“No matter who we’ll have to fight, the stronger they get, the stronger we’ll get too.”

Later, the counters are in the Senior Citizen Center and join the kimchi-making of the elders. We are then introduced to Ma Joo-seok and his wife, Min-ji. Joo-seok is a fireman and has a great character. While talking to So-mun, he shares the very good news that he will soon be a father. Everyone in the center congratulates him and his wife.

While So-mun and Hana step out to bring some kimchi to other people, they save a child and his mother from domestic violence. They handed the father over to the police. They bring the mother and son to the noodle shop to have something to eat and tell them that they are welcome there anytime.

Then, it gets revealed that Ma Joo-seok and his wife are victims of a housing scam. Although they seemed okay now, the wife still wants to recover their money but the leader of the housing fraud commits suicide. In China, we see four Counters entering a big house to take down evil spirits.

Unfortunately, they met their untimely demise because the evil spirits are much stronger than they thought. Hwang Pil-gwang, Gelly, and Wong absorb the powers of the Counters that they killed. With their new powers, Pil-gwang tells them that it’s time to go back to Korea.

So-mun and his fellow Counters learn about the unfortunate incident including the fact that their new enemies also have abilities similar to them.

Next, the Counters rush to save Jun Hui and his mother once again. They are being pursued by debt collectors and plans to harvest their organs.

Elsewhere, we see Na Jeok-bong is busy taking care of his cows and then goes on a blind date. However, the woman meeting him seems to be disappointed and excuses herself to leave abruptly. Jeok-bong follows her to return the cell phone she left behind. He sees a truck and rushes toward the girl to save her.

“Sure, being strong is important to become a Counter. But the most important thing is being dedicated to saving lives.”

Mo-tak witnesses the incident and tells Wigen that he might be the new Counter they need. While Jeok-bong is lying unconscious in the hospital, Wigen approaches his consciousness and tells him that they want him as a Counter and explains the things he needs to do if he accepts the job. Wigen gives him time to think first.

Meanwhile, Min-ji attends the court hearing to witness the verdict for the person who scammed them and other people. She leaves disappointed because of the unfavorable ruling.

As she is waiting for the elevator, the door opens and she sees the man who scammed them, and the three evil spirits. Pil-gwang is demanding money from the man. As Gelly sees Min-ji, she pulls her inside the elevator.

On the other hand, Joo-seok saves a man that sets himself on fire. His colleague later tells him that he needs to rush to the hospital. When he arrives, he witnesses his wife’s last moments. He is very devastated, and so are So-mun and Hana who are also present in the hospital.

Soon after, the funeral is held and Joo-seok becomes furious to learn that the man in the elevator together with his wife regains consciousness while his wife and their baby are both dead.

“Why did he live when he wanted to die? And why did Minji die when she was desperate to live?”

Jeok-bong agrees to become a Counter and forms a bond with Jong-guk. He soon wakes up and Mo-tak is waiting for him to bring him to the noodle shop to meet the team. Hana will be his mentor. Joo-seok continues to grieve for his wife and refuses to eat.

The next day, Wong keeps on torturing a man. He notices the territory and Hana detects him because of this. The Counters except Jeok-bong arrive at the site to look for the victim and the evil spirit. Hana sees Wong first and they begin to exchange blows. Mo-tak arrives to help her but it’s hard to defeat Wong as he is stronger than them.

So-mun finally arrives and saves them but got easily distracted and Wong is able to escape. Unknown to them, Pil-gwang and Gelly are watching from afar. Hana tells her team that it is Wong who kills Ms. So but she also sees Minji in his memories.

To confirm what really happened, they try to access the scam culprit’s memory only to find out that it is Pil-gwang who killed Min-ji. With this discovery, the Counters are furious and plan to take care of the evil spirits soon.

The next day, So Mun makes sketches of the evil spirits when Na-yul and her classmates with their teacher arrive for a meal. While they are happily waiting for their food to be served, So-mun sees Pil-gwang entering the noodle shop.

The Uncanny Counter 2 Opening Week Musings

The ending of episode two makes viewers want to watch episode three right away. Still carrying its signature exciting cliffhangers, we won’t stop expecting more from the series.

Season 1 is such a hard season to beat. Let’s all hope and pray that season two will not disappoint. It draws satisfaction to see the same cast because the evident familiarity is a factor in the continuity of a series. Notably, we learned to love the Counters in the first season a lot.

This week’s episode also opens the knowledge of other groups of Counters. The introduced villain pact also makes a resounding presence in the story.

It is interesting to see what Na Jeok-bong’s character would be. Hopefully, he learns how to fight as soon as possible because the threat and power of the three villains is enormous. Our favorite Counters really need all the help that they can get.

So far, the actors playing the evil spirits are doing a great job. It’s just two episodes but we hate them already. Also, let’s look forward to Ma Jeo-sook’s character development. How the sadness and the anger that he feels will turn him into a different person.

Great opening week pitch so far! The Uncanny Counter 2 made sure its return is worth the wait!
