Netflix is doubling down on its reputation as a haven for gripping thrillers, unleashing Karma – a dark, intricate drama powered by the electrifying synergy of its six-strong cast.
At a bustling Seoul press conference, director Lee Il-hyung and the stellar lineup – Park Hae Soo, Shin Min Ah, Lee Hee Joon, Kim Sung Kyun, Lee Kwang Soo, and Gong Seung Yeon – unveiled the series, promising a rollercoaster of moral ambiguity and inescapable entanglements.
Adapted from a popular Kakao webtoon, Karma plunges viewers into a web of interconnected lives, each teetering on the edge of desperation. Director Lee, captivated by the webtoon’s intensity, opted for a series format to fully explore the sprawling, twisted tale. “The longer format allowed me to weave a complex narrative, maintaining relentless tension across six episodes,” he explained, emphasizing his dedication to crafting an ending that leaves viewers breathlessly craving more.
The cast, drawn in by the script’s raw power, echoed the director’s enthusiasm. Park Hae-soo lauded the story’s “extreme and intense” nature, while Shin Min-a confessed to being instantly hooked, eager to dive into the genre-rich narrative. Lee Hee-joon, tasked with kicking off the series as the morally compromised loan shark, playfully acknowledged the pressure of delivering a captivating opener. Lee Kwang-soo, shedding his comedic persona, relished his villainous turn, while Gong Seung-yeon embraced her femme fatale role with gusto.
Director Lee, after two years of meticulous planning and writing, expressed his anticipation and nerves about the global release. “I wanted to craft a narrative where the ‘evil romance’ unfolds gradually, keeping viewers guessing until the very end,” he stated.
Karma promises a masterclass in suspense, a testament to Netflix’s commitment to delivering high-octane thrillers that resonate with audiences worldwide. Prepare for a dark, compelling ride when it drops on Netflix on April 4th.
