Fans are bracing themselves for the final chapter of the game that has captured the hearts of millions worldwide.
On the morning of June 9th, the production conference for Squid Game 3 took place at Seoul Dragon City in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Director Hwang Dong-hyeok, along with actors Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, Im Si Wan, Kang Ha Neul, Wi Ha Jun, Park Gyu Young, Lee Jin Wook, Park Sung Hoon, Yang Dong Geun, Kang Ae Shim, Jo Yu Ri, Chae Kook Hee, David Lee, and Noh Jae Won, gathered to share insights about the highly anticipated season.
Season 3 will follow the story of Ki-hoon (Lee Jung-jae), who, after losing his best friend in a failed rebellion, returns to the game with his own goals. The Frontman (Lee Byung-hun), who has been hiding his true identity, will continue his dangerous manipulation. Meanwhile, the fate of the remaining survivors will unfold in the brutal, high-stakes environment of the game. Fans can expect the third season to offer a resolution to the ongoing battle between good and evil, with the fate of the participants hanging in the balance.
Notably, Squid Game Season 3 was filmed concurrently with Season 2, and serves as the final chapter in this long-running saga.
Director Hwang Dong-hyeok revealed that the confrontation between worldviews will reach its dramatic conclusion in this season, adding, “There are no plans for a Season 4. This is something we discussed and finalized with Netflix while making Season 3.”
Hwang continued, “While it may seem like there could be a Season 4, there’s no immediate need for one. I have other projects in mind right now. However, I have thought about the possibility of a spin-off. There were moments during filming when I was curious about what certain characters were up to during the games, and I’d like to explore that in the future.”
As for the characters, Lee Jung-jae, who portrays Ki-hoon, spoke about his character’s evolution: “In Season 3, Ki-hoon has to grapple with the guilt and despair of not saving more people in the game. In Season 2, he wanted to stop playing the game and punish the creator, but in this season, he begins to think about what else he can do within the game. Ki-hoon makes a decision and acts on it, signaling a shift in his mindset.”
Lee Byung-hun, who plays the enigmatic Frontman, shared his thoughts on the emotional aftermath of Season 2: “Ki-hoon is devastated when the Frontman kills his best friend. He’s left feeling powerless. But Ki-hoon regains his convictions and reaffirms his belief in humanity. The Frontman, on the other hand, has his own plans to destroy everything Ki-hoon holds dear. Season 3 will be a dramatic and intense battle between the two, offering a thrilling conclusion to the story arc.“
The cast also teased the dynamics of their respective characters. Im Si-wan, who plays Myung-ki, described his character’s descent into danger, while Kang Ha-neul, portraying Dae-ho, hinted at the intense relationships his character will form with the other contestants.
Lee Jin-wook, who plays the eliminated contestant Gyeong-seok, sparked intrigue by hinting at the fates of those who were once eliminated, saying, “Only participants and the pink guards can exist in the game, so I’m curious to see how the story unfolds for the characters who were previously eliminated.”
Park Sung-hoon, who plays Hyun-joo, hinted at the growth of his character’s altruism and survival instincts, while Yang Dong-geun, whose character plays a mother-son duo with Gyeong-ja, teased a twist in their storyline: “The dynamic between Yong-sik and Gyeong-ja will not only reflect changes in their relationship, but also reveal how the evolving circumstances affect their bond.“
Kang Ae-shim, who plays the protective mother figure, commented, “In Season 2, I was anxious about my son’s reckless actions. In Season 3, you’ll see how both of us evolve under extreme pressure and how far we’re willing to go to push our limits.“
Jo Yu-ri, portraying the pregnant contestant Jun-hee, shared a glimpse of the challenges her character will face: “Being pregnant while playing the game will make Jun-hee’s journey even more intense, both mentally and physically. She’ll show incredible strength, so look forward to it.“
Other actors, like Chae Gook-hee and Noh Jae-won, hinted at emotional and relational transformations that will take place in Season 3, making the stakes even higher for the participants. Wi Ha-joon, who plays Jun-ho, expressed curiosity about the possible reunion with his brother, the Frontman, adding, “Please look forward to how Jun-ho’s emotions deepen this season. I miss him and hope they can finally meet.“
Park Gyu-young, who plays No-eul, the pink guard, hinted at her character’s internal conflict: “While No-eul is a pink guard, she has a basic respect for human life. In Season 3, she faces even more intense and solitary battles, which will reveal new layers to her character.“
Finally, Director Hwang teased an exciting new set of games in the upcoming season. “In the trailer, there’s a game involving a rope on a high bridge, and players fall if they trip. There’s also a maze-like game where participants are split into red and blue teams. Plus, there’s a hidden final game that I can’t reveal yet—watch till the end,” he said, fueling fans’ excitement even more.
Squid Game Season 3 promises to be a wild, emotional rollercoaster filled with shocking twists, dramatic confrontations, and heart-pounding suspense. The final season is set to be released on June 27, and the world is watching eagerly to see how this explosive series comes to its thrilling conclusion.
