Elevating expectations from the upcoming musical-fantasy series; the cast and creator of Sound Of Magic are set to make the audience believe in magic again on May 6!
In concluding The Sound Of Magic media conference, the whole team made a lasting impression with their creative stage design and snippets. Lead cast Ji Chang Wook, Choi Sung Eun, Hwang In Hyeop, and Director Kim Seong Yoon emotionally share their preparations and what viewers should expect.
The Sound Of Magic narrates the story of Yoon Ah Yi (Choi Sung Eun), a hardworking and intelligent student who supports herself and her younger sister. Despite struggling financially, this did not stop her from excelling in her studies and dream a good life.
Furthermore, she competes with Na Il Deung (Hwang In Yeop) for landing on the top list in their school. However, romance magically blooms between them. They then meet a magician named Ri Eul (Ji Chang Wook), who will help them believe in magic and themselves.
Magic For All
At the recent conference, Director Kim Seong Yoon talks about what makes The Sound Of Magic special and challenging. Director Kim warmly expressed,
It wasn’t a fancy or ambitious message I wanted to portray. When I meet childhood friends or school friends, we often talk about “are we really adults?” “can we confidently say we’re truly grown-ups? Can we say that to our children?” And I think that’s sort of the message that I would like to convey naturally. What does it mean to be a
grown-up? What do we want our children to grow up to be? And what is a life that is more happy? I want anyone who watches the series to be able to talk about these things along with not just adults but with children as well.
Furthermore, he revealed the challenges he faced when creating the series,
“It took 7 or 8 years to bring it as a drama. I really love the webtoon so I contacted the writer. The story is difficult to bring to live-action so I want to take the challenge and I’m happy to have kept that promise.”
Lastly, Director Kim explains the importance of adding music to the show.
“The whole point of having music is to convey the emotions of Ah-Yi. To portray it we need song numbers done by the characters. Same with magic, I didn’t focus on techniques but explored more the emotions of Ri-eul.”
Ji Chang Wook’s Once In A Lifetime Role
Ready to serve visuals and a never before seen portrayal, the actor first voices his own experiences with the story of The Sound Of Magic. He briefly explains who the series want to communicate with.
“I felt that this is the story for all of us.”
In addition, working with the other cast of the series helped Chang Wook relive his dreams.
“I have these dreams as a child and I wanted to refine these childhood wonders. I wanted to make good chemistry among the cast members.”
Being part of a musical series is also a new and challenging portrayal for the actor. Nevertheless, he revealed that the music team helped him, thus becoming a joyful experience for him.
“There were many challenging parts, but this is a chance of a lifetime where I can have the opportunity to do magic.”
Choi Sung Eun’s Anticipated Lyrical Acting
Leaving impressions with her portrayal in Beyond Evil, the actress once again gives birth to another character that many will love and resonates with.
“The story is beautiful and relatable. I was curious about how it will be made in the series. I was drawn to Director Kim’s honesty. I wanted to make sure that people can really understand or resonate with Ah-Yi. It would help viewers understand her more. I focused on making the audience empathize with Ah-Yi.
When asked about the most challenging part of portraying Ah Yi, Choi remarked:
“Every work is a challenge. It took a lot of me. I got a lot of help from other people since I have to sing the lyrics. At some point, the lyrics helped me portray Ah-Yi.”
Hwang In Youp’s Dream To Pull Of Any Role
Portraying another student role, Hwang Yeop promises to introduce a unique character that will charm viewers again. Furthermore, he shares what he loves about the show and what preparations he made for embodying Il Deung’s story.
“I tried my best to understand and get to know how he expresses feelings and what he really wants. The most important thing when acting him out was to really get to know him and get to understand him.”
On the meaningful experiences, he got from the series:
“The music was just so great. The space and the set were so fantastic as well. I was also given the opportunity to perform with such great music. I felt like we’re left with such great memories.”
The Sound Of Magic Casts’ Invitation
Ji Chang Wook’s concluding statements assure a ‘trip down memory lane’ experience.
“Sometimes we lose track of our childhood wonders, this drama will let you reminisce about your childhood. I hope everyone can enjoy the show. Thank you.”
On the other hand, Choi Sung Eun ends with a heartfelt and strong message about the series.
“Maybe some people think if they can dream again. The show can give you courage and roots for you to give it another try. I hope you watch the show.”
For Hwang In Yeop, the series will leave comfort and warmth in the audience’s hearts.
“I think this show is going to provide you with some warm consolation so I hope you can all watch the show and enjoy it.”
Lastly, Director Kim touches the heart of many with his words,
“I have certain stories that I really like – stories that show personal growth. I think the line “do you believe in magic” means “do you believe in miracles”. I hope you can have fun watching the show. “
