“I Found a New Side of Me”: Cha Hak Yeon on Playing a Quirky YouTuber in “Oh My Ghost Clients”

Cha Hak Yeon sat down for a media interview to share his thoughts on wrapping up MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama Oh My Ghost Clients.

The drama, which concluded on June 28 with its 10th episode, is a comic fantasy action series that follows a labor attorney who sees ghosts and tackles workplace injustices.

Cha Hak Yeon took on the role of Go Gyeon-woo, a witty, offbeat video creator who originally pursued journalism but switched lanes in search of viral views. As he joins labor attorney Noh Moo-jin (Jung Kyung Ho) and activist Na Hee-joo (Seol In Ah) on the front lines of labor conflicts, Gyeon-woo slowly shifts from chasing clout to chasing truth.

RELATED STORY

To bring the quirky “watchdog YouTuber” to life, Cha did his homework. “I studied a bunch of real-life YouTubers. Everyone had such different vibes and styles. I observed their unique traits and built a broadcasting setup of my own to really get into Gyeon-woo’s shoes,” he said. “Greeting the audience like a real streamer was tough at first—my ears turned red from embarrassment! But I kept practicing with my phone, and soon, I was able to fully embrace it on set.

He also shared an insight from his co-star: “Jung Kyung-ho told me Gyeon-woo and I actually have a lot in common. I may not speak as fast or show as much emotion, but seeing this character brought out a new, unexpected side of me. It was fun—and kind of refreshing—to explore that.

Though Gyeon-woo added comic flair to the series, the drama itself tackled heavy, often emotional issues in the workplace. “Because the subject matter was already weighty, I didn’t want to overdo the humor,” Cha explained. “Even though Gyeon-woo is the one to lighten the tone, I focused more on portraying how he genuinely processes the stories and struggles of workers.

With Oh My Ghost Clients now concluded, Cha Hak Yeon leaves behind a role that highlighted both his versatility and depth. Through Gyeon-woo, he not only delivered laughs but also offered subtle reflections on sincerity, growth, and standing up for what’s right.
