Foretelling a mesmerizing poignant romance story, the new tvN weekend series features Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung in the newest teasers.
Captivating the King chronicles the cruel fate of King Lee In who is high-ranking but despondent, and Kang Hee-soo who dreamed of revenge but fell in love with him.
Director Jo Nam-kuk, who was recognized for his solid directing skills through dramas such as The Good Detective and The Untouchables, and writer Kim Seon-deok, who started the legend of a well-made historical drama for tvN with The Crowned Clown collaborated for the series.
Jo Jung Suk plays the role of Lee In, an infinitely strong but pathetic man and king. He was taken hostage by the Qing Dynasty, promising to live faithfully as a subject of his older brother Lee Seon, who cared for him, but soon his loyalty was seen as treason, and even his older brother came to hate him. The moment he was in pain, he met an ‘unknown baduk player’ and his heart was completely stolen.
Shin Se Kyung plays the role of Kang Hee-soo, a woman who penetrates the king’s heart and dreams of revenge. While Kang Hee-su was gaining fame as an ‘unknown baduk player’, he met Prince Jinhan’s and helplessly fell in love with him. However, she became entangled in the whirlpool of fate and was transformed into a spy.
Hyping interest for the new tvN series, two posters were unveiled presenting the contrasting expressions of Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung.
In the drama, the fated attraction toward each other changes into a sharp boundary.
They look at each other in a field where peach tree petals are fluttering. Prince Jinhan and baduk genius Kang Mong-woo, a cross-dressing woman are locked in a gaze. They met while hiding their identities, but became friends through the game of baduk.
However, despite the strong, unknown attraction, the distance between them, who have no choice but to hide their sorrowful eyes from each other, attracts attention.
In another poster, they show sharp alertness against the backdrop of an eerie-looking palace, heightening tension.
Above all, Jo Jung Suk, who became a lonely king, and Shin Se Kyung, who meets again as a spy, and vows revenge on him, create an evident tension. However, as they stand so close with their backs to each other, they can hear each other’s breathing. It foreshadows the fascinating romance the two will unfold in the future.
The phrase “When you love, you hope to live, and when you hate, you hope to die” also captures the relationship between the two characters.
On the 29th, the melodrama teaser video was released. The released melodrama teaser video begins with Grand Prince Jinhan and Kang Hee-soo sitting across from each other by a stream.
Grand Prince Jinhan finds a pebble that can be used as a white stone and hands it to Hee-soo requesting to give it to Mong-woo. Responding, Kang Hee-soo said, “Please take care of me for a moment. “I’ll get it back the next time there’s a light rain,” she said, carefully accepting it.
When the long-awaited drizzle falls, two people miss each other greatly. Later, he faces the cruel fate of being reunited with the king as a servant. The two people kiss after Prince Jinhan’s confession, “I like you, Mong-woo,” and Kang Hee-soo’s trembling voice says, “I have a wish.”
The production team said, “We are excited about the strong love between the king, who is in a high position but has a lowly heart, and a spy who has fallen in love with him but is trying to overthrow the king.”
Captivating the King will be broadcast for the first time on January 21, 2024 with the first and second episodes.
