The star-studded cast of IDOL: The Coup express their thoughts and experiences in the drama!
JTBC’s new Monday-Tuesday drama IDOL: The Coup is a story that resonates with young people who cannot part ways with their failed dreams.
In the drama’s press conference, Ahn Hee Yeon (Hani), WJSN’s Chu So-jung (EXY), LABOUM’s Ahn Sol-bin (Solbin), and REDSQUARE’s Kim Jiwon (Green) share how they shed tears while being immersed in their characters from the fictitious girl group Cotton Candy in the drama.
Immersed in Their Characters
Ahn Hee Yeon portrays Jenna, the leader of the group Cotton Candy, and she expresses how interested she was in the script as it had an uncanny resemblance with her life story.
“I teared up every time I read the script. But I took comfort in the knowledge that if not for my struggles, and for EXID, I probably wouldn’t be able to portray this role well.”
The idol actress also reveals that fellow EXID member Jeonghwa has analyzed the script with her, and expresses how valuable the story of the drama is as it can bring comfort and strength to a lot of people such as idols.
“I revisited my diary and variety shows to recall my memories and struggles, and tried presenting that on-screen to heal those with similar experiences.”
On the other hand, Chu So-jung feels immersed in the drama and sees it as a story that goes beyond being an idol. She asserts it also highlights the youth pursuing their dreams.
“I was too immersed. I was able to quickly understand the flow of the emotion line. Above all, “Idol the Coup” is a drama about idols, but it is also a youth drama for those who desperately run toward their dreams. Even if you are not an idol, you can fully sympathize with it and make your heart ache.”
With a smile, Ahn Sol-bin, playing Hyun-ji, shares that her character likes to drink, and jokingly told that she felt drunk as she was so much into her role. Moreover, she reveals that her experiences working with LABOUM have helped her a lot with her role.
Redsquare’s Kim Ji-won, also known as Green, admits how much she cried on set as they were overly immersed with the story.
“Since I read the script, I thought it was very much like my story. So, I cried a lot while acting. I was sad whenever I met the members on set.”
Working with the Cast
Being the only member of Cotton Candy who is not an idol, actress Han So-eun shares how helpful the members were by sharing the life of an idol.
“There were many things I didn’t understand, but the members helped me a lot. I seriously listened to the idol’s life and referred to it for acting. As a result, I understood the script a lot.”
Rating the chemistry within Cotton Candy, the members unanimously have given scores beyond 10, which is the limit. Responses range from hundred and even reaching the millions, but Green is the only exception as she has given a score of 99, with Cotton Candy ending their run as the deduction’s reason.
In response to that, Kwak Si-yang, playing as the company’s CEO, jokingly said, “Please let them make their debut!”
Ahn Hee Yeon reveals that she had extremely good working experience with Kwak Si Yang and Kim Minkyu. She commends the two along with her friendship with the other members of Cotton Candy.
Kwak Si Yang also appreciates his comfortable working experience with Hani and Minkyu.
“We worked well together. There was good tension when acting with Hani, and Minkyu is like a younger brother to me. We teased each other and felt comfortable together.”
In line with what Kwak said, Kim Min-kyu compares his senior’s role versus his real personality.
“Unlike his cool and aloof demeanour as CEO in the show, Kwak Si-yang has a really warm personality in real life. He even winks at me sometimes.”
An Eye-Opening Drama about the Reality of Idols & Dreamers
Furthermore, Kwak Si-yang foresees that many people may come to sympathize with the story, realizing that being an idol is not all easy and glamorous.
Kim Minkyu adds that the drama portrays a deeper side of the idol world, and that young people can relate to every episode as it reflects reality more than other dramas.
IDOL: The Coup is a drama that comforts and sympathizes with the youth of today and to those who have at least once experienced failure. Although the beginning of the drama may be full of tears, PD Noh Jong Chan affirms that it will gradually progress into hope and courage.
