A Variety of Juvenile Crimes To Unveil Through The Four Judges’ Perspectives In “Juvenile Justice”

On The Creative Inspiration of Juvenile Justice

Conveying their thoughts about the sensitive topics highlighted in the series, the showrunners and cast made sound statements about the message of the story.

Director Hong Jong Chan reveals he contemplated a lot while preparing the project since his information about juvenile offenders is limited to what the media has so far provided.

“Our drama is not a work that provides an answer. I wanted to show it from a diverse and balanced perspective, rather than representing one side. It is not a work that focuses on juvenile criminals, but approaches the idea of unraveling the stories we don’t know about that leads to it. It is not a single problem, but is deeply involved in our society and social system, starting from the family surrounding the youth.”

Writer Kim Min Seok, who was in charge of the adaptation, asserts focusing on the various sides while remaining objective.

“I wanted to share various stories through various cases. Through the coverage, I learned that I should not be biased toward one side. I wrote it while being wary of what I was trying to impart. The juvenile justice division garners interest because it involves young people who commit crimes even after punishment or whether they are adapting well to the new environment.”

Meanwhile, Kim Hye Soo remarks admiration for how the script was written in consideration of its sensitive and heavy subject.

“I was surprised and glad that a sensitive and somewhat heavy subject such as juvenile crime and juvenile criminals can be written with such power. The fun of the story was conveyed with sincerity, not technique. I thought it was a work that threw a message beyond the fun of the series, and it was a work that could contain drama, fun, completeness. That’s why I was happy to participate.”

The respected actress relays how she was able to empathize with real judges’ enormous workload and how heavy their responsibility is. Before, her thoughts about juvenile crime were nothing but anger and regret. Working on the series made her draw insights as to the role of society and the balanced view on juvenile crimes.

Likewise, Kim Mu Yeol agrees with how insightful the topic that Juvenile Justice is.

“It’s been a long time since the topic of juvenile offenders has been publicly debated. That’s why I was interested. I realized that I didn’t know much about this issue. Juvenile Justice is a drama that can show aspects that we knew but were differently packaged by the society.”

In portraying the role of Judge Kang Won-jung, seasoned actor Lee Sung Min voices out his opinion about the refreshing work. He shares how he appeared in a work about a juvenile offender before.

“I remember being very frustrated while filming the movie, thinking that this is not a simple problem, that it is a problem where opinions can differ depending on who’s position. This drama is refreshing because it focuses on the role of a judge who decides whether or not to suspect a crime. I think it will be an opportunity to approach the issue of juvenile criminals from a new perspective.”

Lastly, Lee Jung Eun remarks feeling grateful for the impact that Juvenile Justice can give on the viewers. She also mentions how the narrative has an addicting hook that would make the viewers see its end.

“I was very happy as an actor because it is a work that could show the character of the times we live in by touching fresh and special content. I chose it because I was very interested in the subject. If these questions can raise public debate, I wonder if better suggestions will come out.”
