A Gripping Identity Chase Unfolds in Netflix’s New Thriller Series Top-Billed By Sul Kyung Gu and Ryu Jun Yeol

What would you do if a mysterious stranger stole your entire identity? Netflix has announced its captivating new series, The Rat (WT), confirming Ryu Jun Yeol and Sul Kyung Gu in starring roles.

This chilling thriller is based on the Kakao Entertainment Webtoon “Field Mouse,” which draws inspiration from an ancient Korean folktale about a rat becoming human by consuming clipped fingernails. The series follows a reclusive novelist who forms an unlikely alliance with a loan shark—who once pursued him—to hunt down the enigmatic “Rat” who has taken everything from him.

Ryu Jun Yeol (Revelations, The 8 Show) takes on the role of Moon-jae, a sociophobic novelist living a secluded life. One day, his phone no longer recognizes his fingerprint, and his only friend, who managed all his affairs, vanishes. Stripped of his name, identity, and finances, Moon-jae discovers that a mysterious “Rat” has stolen his entire existence. Determined to reclaim his life, he embarks on a quest to uncover the truth.

Sul Kyung Gu (The Whirlwind, Kill Boksoon) transforms into No-ja, a relentless loan shark who runs a private detective agency and stops at nothing for money. No-ja, who previously hounded Moon-jae for an unpaid loan, is stunned when Moon-jae reappears three years later, seeking help to track down the “Rat.” While initially focused on recovering his money, No-ja quickly gets drawn into the hunt. This series marks the first on-screen collaboration between these two seasoned actors, Ryu Jun Yeol and Sul Kyung-gu.

A Dream Team Behind the Scenes

The project is helmed by director Kim Hong-sun, renowned for his expertise in genre shows such as Dear Hongrang, Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area, The Guest, L.U.C.A.: The Beginning, and Voice. The screenplay is penned by Lee Jae-gon, known for classic crime shows like Special Affairs Team TEN and compelling, character-driven narratives like A Model Family. Their combined mastery of thrillers and mysteries promises a high-caliber, mind-bending series.

Adding to the anticipation, Kakao Entertainment—known for its exceptional skill in adapting webtoons and web novels into hits like Karma, Call It Love, and Business Proposal—is co-producing the series alongside CJes Studios and H.House.

Stay tuned for more updates on The Rat (WT), coming soon only to Netflix.
