Deadly Bonds: Go Hyun Jung and Jang Dong Yoon Face Off in “Queen Mantis”

In SBS’s upcoming Friday-Saturday drama Queen Mantis, premiering September 5, a chilling game of trust and betrayal unfolds.

Two decades after the notorious serial killer “Mantis” was caught, a string of copycat murders rocks the city. To crack the case, Detective Cha Soo-yeol (Jang Dong Yoon) must forge an unthinkable alliance… with the very woman he’s despised all his life—his mother, Jung Yi-shin (Go Hyun Jung), the original “Mantis.”

The series is already generating buzz thanks to its powerhouse leads: Go Hyun Jung, a screen legend known for her magnetic presence, and Jang Dong Yoon, an actor praised for his versatility and depth. Together, they promise a combustible mix of tension, complexity, and raw emotion in a mother-son dynamic like no other.

On August 14, SBS dropped the first two-character posters featuring the pair. In one striking image, light cuts through darkness as Go Hyun-jung gazes blankly ahead—her expression masking a well of crushing sorrow—while Jang Dong-yoon rests his head in her lap, his eyes glinting with desperate resolve. The composition, evocative of the film Pieta, suggests a relationship steeped in pain, redemption, and moral ambiguity—but with a chilling twist: she’s a killer, and he’s a cop.

The posters’ text hints at their razor-sharp exchanges: “How warm. The hand that killed five people,” the detective sneers in the teaser, while another line reveals his reluctant plea: “Please help me. I’ll think like you. I’ll act like you.” These fragments tease a dangerous emotional dance, where shared bloodlines may be the only bridge between justice and darkness.

Even in still images, the synergy between Go and Jang is palpable, brimming with unspoken history and perilous intimacy. With each promotional reveal, anticipation climbs for what promises to be a gripping, emotionally charged thriller.
