JTBC’s new drama is set to feature an elite family with a quenchless desire for wealth and entitlement.
Tapped as the main cast of The Empire are accomplished actors Kim Sun Ah, Ahn Jae Wook, Lee Mi Sook, Song Young Chang, Goo Shin and Oh Hyun Kyung.
To be helmed by director Yoon Hyun Ki (Soul Mechanic, Matromonial Chaos); the series deals with the scandalous life of an aristocratic family. They hide their revolting and shocking lives through the fame and privilege they had established.
At the center of the story is Han Hye-ryul, portrayed by Kim Sun Ah. She is the head of the special division of the Central Prosecutors’ Office and the antagonist of the Ham family that has inherited massive riches and high ground.
Unable to free herself from the rein of the household she belongs to, she begins to draw trump cards in an attempt to escape and realize her own desires.
Look forward to how Kim Sun Ah’s charisma melts with Hye-ryul’s grit.
Next, Ahn Jae Wook plays Na Geun-woo, a law school professor married to Hye-ryul. He seems to be living a perfect life but in reality, he is just a pawn on the chess board.
The public, unaware of his private life, loves him, and he begins a thorough disguise to hide her true identity. It is interesting to see how Ahn Jae-wook will express the gap between the characters of Na Geun-woo, who hides two faces with a friendly face.
Privileged Ham Family
Attention is also focused on Lee Mi Sook, a professor at Minguk University Law School who will play Ham Kwang-jeon, the mother of Hye-ryul.
She is sketched to be intolerable of any risk of harm to marriage and her family to maintain the Ham empire. She has two daughters who are more precious to her than her life. Yet, she has choices to make to protect them and her fortress that is built by her own customized law.
Song Young-chang takes on the role of Han Geon-do, the husband of Kwang-jeon and Hye-ryul’s father. Although he is a representative lawyer at Korea’s best law firm Ham & Lee, he is a conspirator who only thinks of the law as a means of earning money and a way to rule.
When the law, which had been used as a device to subdue others, tightens his lifeline, he was forced to utilize the law for a purpose he has never used before.
Shin Goo plays Ham Min-heon, Hye-ryul’s grandfather, who is a former Supreme Court justice and has the highest legal authority in the family. He became more tyrant than his autocratic father and took everything from his family. He has money, fame and power, but he can’t trust anyone.
Oh Hyun Kyung plays the role of Hae-ryul grandmother, Lee Ae-heon, who captivated Ham Min-heon. In English, Japanese, and Chinese, as well as cooking, massage, and braille service; she hides her evil intentions, seduces Min-Hun in an instant, and succeeds in marrying him. But she has an ambition that can’t be stopped inside her.
The Empire is scheduled to premiere on September 24 at 10:30 pm on JTBC.
