Yook Sung Jae transforms into the fearsome yet irresistibly charming Imoogi in SBS’s upcoming Friday-Saturday drama The Haunted Palace.
This fantasy rom-com follows Yeo-ri, a shaman who refuses to accept her psychic destiny, and Kang Chul-yi, an Imoogi trapped in the body of Yeo-ri’s first love, Yoon Gap. As they face off against an eight-faced ghost harboring a grudge against the royal family, their fates become entangled in both body and soul.
The drama is helmed by acclaimed director Yoon Sung-sik (Mr. Queen, Bridal Mask) and writer Yoon Soo-jung (The King’s Face, Cheer Up), promising a thrilling blend of romance, comedy, and supernatural intrigue.
Yook Sung Jae takes on the dual roles of Yoon Gap, a noble prosecutor, and Kang Chul-yi, the Imoogi-possessed entity within him. From a refined, intelligent scholar to an untamed force of darkness, his performance is set to showcase both elegance and eerie magnetism. His portrayal of Kang Chul-yi, a being with unrivaled charisma who dominates the palace and capital, is already drawing major anticipation.
Newly released stills give a glimpse into his striking transformation. Gone is the gentle, boyish charm of Yoon Gap—replaced by the commanding presence of Kang Chul-yi, whose piercing gaze and unmistakable Imoogi scales trailing down his neck exude both beauty and menace. His sharp, icy stare radiates the aura of an omnipotent evil god, sending shivers down viewers’ spines.
Other images highlight his unpredictable nature. One shot captures him sprawled on the ground in formal attire, his expression and gestures teetering between madness and mischief, adding a comedic touch to his otherwise formidable persona. Another still shows him standing atop the palace roof in broad daylight, looking down upon the human world with an air of untouchable arrogance. His blend of overwhelming charisma and absurd unpredictability makes him a villain impossible to hate.
From sheer dominance to eccentric charm, Yook Sung Jae flawlessly embodies the essence of the thousand-year-old Imoogi, leaving fans eager to witness his performance.
SBS’s The Haunted Palace, a fantasy romance that pushes the boundaries of K-fantasy historical dramas, is set to premiere in April following Buried Hearts.
