“The Silent Sea” Reveals Bae Doona and Gong Yoo’s Behind-the-Scenes Experiences

Unveiling Bae Doona and Gong Yoo’s character stills, the two notable actors also discuss their preparations for The Silent Sea.

The Silent Sea follows an elite team on a special mission to an abandoned lunar research facility in the year 2075, during which natural resource depletion devastated the Earth.

Geared up with space suits and ready to set foot on the moon, Bae Doona and Gong Yoo are fully equipped in their search for clues to human survival in The Silent Sea.

Moreover, both stars, who pioneered the K-zombie craze with Netflix’s Kingdom and the film Train to Busan, will take on the sci-fi mystery thriller challenge for the first time.

A Glimpse of Gong Yoo and Bae Doona’s Special Mission

In the unveiled teasers, space biologist Song Ji-an (Bae Doona) and exploration captain Han Yun-jae (Gong Yoo) complete a mission with a 10% survival rate while concealing their true intentions.

With an impression of disliking each other on Earth, Song Ji-an and Han Yoon-jae confront the mystery surrounding the mission at Balhae base. A larger conflict follows, which has come after a thousand years of difficulty.

While they are tasked with locating clues to humanity’s survival, the two also have their own secret tasks to complete. The question grows as to whether two people who are like parallel lines that cannot meet will ever unite.

The Main Lead Cast’s Preparation For The Silent Sea

Explicating her reason, Bae Doona explains why she opted to join the series.

“I was curious about The Silent Sea set in space, and it stimulated the spirit of challenge.”

Likewise, she carefully studies Song Ji-an’s warrior and psychological state in great detail and grows to connect with the character.

Correspondingly, producer Jung Woo Sung acknowledges Bae Doona as an actress on set.

Bae Doona is an actress who is in the emotions of the character that she has to use throughout her filming set.”

On the other hand, Gong Yoo plays Han Yun-jae, who goes above and beyond to keep the team safe and execute their missions.

Conveying a person who grew harsh and cold as a former soldier, external aspects like tanned skin and tattoos were deliberately chosen.

Expressing his excitement, Gong Yoo emphasizes his joy at joining The Silent Sea.

It’s a work I’ve been waiting for. I had a desire for a genre, but it was a scenario that I intuitively thought of doing at once.

Producer Jung Woo Sung also praised Gong Yoo, who did a great job not only as a character, but also as a captain on the set.

Gong Yoo played a big role in creating teamwork as a team on the set as well as in the moments when he acted as a character.

Bae Doona and Gong Yoo’s Greatest Challenge

For veteran actors Bae Doona and Gong Yoo, The Silent Sea was a great challenge. Setting foot in the new genre of the first sci-fi mystery thriller series set in space, they overcame many firsts together with the production team.

The first challenge the actors faced was the costume. A spacesuit with several devices attached, including a life support device, weighed quite a bit and placed considerable restrictions on movement.

Subsequently, the actors got used to the weight of the clothes every day, and in the second half of the filming, they moved as if they were one body.

Starting with the training before filming, the two actors attached different types of wires to create a difference between zero gravity on a spaceship and low gravity on the moon. They further performed movements like swimming in space and walking on the moon with a choreographer.

Showcasing his best performance, Gong Yoo highlights his hard work, from character movements to inner psychology.

I tried to express the movement in a state of zero gravity while at the same time showing the extreme situation. It was difficult, but I am looking forward to creating a wonderful picture that we have never seen before.”

Meanwhile, director Choi Hang-yong remarks that he gives his full trust to the ensemble cast.

“I started with trust, and the trust grew while filming.”

The Silent Sea will premiere Bae Doona and Gong Yoo’s explosive synergy on December 24th, only on Netflix.
