He also conveys the writer’s perspective in Thirty, Nine.
“The writer expressed the age of ‘thirty nine’ as an age full of tension with imminent danger. It seems too early to achieve something before turning 40, or too early to start something new. It seems to be an ambiguous, unstable, and tense age that we want to see. It shows how three friends who are going through an unstable period change as they meet their friend’s misfortune.”
The Three Love Pairings of Thirty, Nine
Seemingly written with the female leads in mind, Son Ye Jin reveals the reason why she picked the drama after her hit series Crash Landing On You.
“If I’m not at my current age, I can’t do this work with my conscience. It was a story of love and a story of women that I could relate to right now.”
Paired with Yeon Woo Jin, the romance between them in the story is to be anticipated. The actor emphasizes how his character is a romanticist. His heart is pure and beautiful and he held various events to win Son’s character’s heart.
Regarding her romance story, Son Ye Jin expressed satisfaction and happiness throughout filming.
Meanwhile, Jeon Mi Do who takes the role of Jung Chan-young, an acting teacher who is terminally ill. In detail, the actress shared how her character is the exact opposite of her role in Hospital Playlist. She’s also curious if people would accept it differently.
Lee Mu Saeng portrays Jeon’s love interest, Kim Jin-seok, in Thirty, Nine. From the love he received from The World of the Married and The Silent Sea, the actor raises expectations with his new work. “As it is a new work, I did my best on how to approach it sincerely,” he said.
Kim Ji Hyun and Lee Tae Hwan complete the last love pairing in the series. Kim is a single mother while Lee works as a chef. Their affair is hinted to be a soft love line where they blend together effortlessly.
The Tale of Three Friends
Son Ye Jin, Jeon Mi Do, and Kim Ji Hyun are expected to captivate the small screen. Notably, the three actresses were born in 1982 and are of the same age.
Boasting about the natural friendship they shared outside filming, Son ponders on how the bond they shared blossomed to full blown real life friendship.
“We didn’t really try to get to know each other. Rather than being forced to become close or making an effort, we became close naturally as the filming progressed. Later, wehn we wanted to chat, we met and chatted. In the end, we became really close.”
Agreeing to the forged sisterhood, Jeon Mi Do revealed learning a lot from Son Ye Jin. She adorably quipped how she and Kim Ji Hyun are fans of Son Ye Jin.
“Actually, Ji-hyun and I have been friends for over 10 years. We played the same role and participated in different roles. We were both fans of Ye-jin. I don’t have much experience, so I had many shortcomings, but whenever that happened, I asked Son Ye Jin to teach me a lot. She also calls her ‘Son Pro’ or ‘Son Sunbae’.”
Kim Ji Hyun also remarked how their personalities fit perfectly, thus they got along really well.
It felt surreal at the thought of acting with Son Ye-jin. I didn’t know she was such a fun person.”
In addition, Kim also mentioned the charming point of the series. While many dramas about women have been aired before, Thirty, Nine heralds its own distinctiveness.
“It focuses on real women’s romance stories. There are also flashbacks that we filmed with us donning young-looking makeup and wardrobe. It was funny while we were filming. It was joyful, so I think it would be fun to watch scenes like that.”
EXTRA SCOOP: Son Ye Jin’s Wedding + Her Insights on Turning 40
Sharing her thoughts when asked about her upcoming marriage, Son Ye Jin disclose being grateful.
“I am happy. I feel like it was fate because something so big happened in the early days of 2022, and I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to the well wishes we received.”
Finally, Son Ye Jin leaves profound message on what it means to be ‘thirty none’. She stresses how maturity as an adult does not happen because you are old.
“When I became an actor in my twenties, I never thought that I would turn forty after thirty, and I never thought about it. It’s like saying that I ate tteokbokki in high school and didn’t even know how to eat it properly at 40. My heart is forever a youth of eighteen. Don’t dwell on it, I hope we can grow up thinking about ourselves and feeling our significant presence with others each day.”
Don’t miss the premiere episode of Thirty, Nine tonight on JTBC. International fans can watch it on Netflix.
