Vigilante has released character stills of Nam Joo Hyuk, who plays Kim Ji-yong, a model police student during the day and a vigilante at night.
When a victim of a brutal crime sees his mother’s attacker get off lightly, he will dedicate his life to making criminals pay in Vigilante.
The series is headlined by Nam Joo Hyuk (Start-Up, Twenty Five Twenty One) as the vengeful vigilante Kim Ji-yong; Yoo Ji Tae (Oldboy, Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area) as Jo Heon, a ruthless detective committed to stopping the Vigilante at any cost; Lee Joon Hyuk (Stranger, Designated Survivor: 60 Days) as Cho Kang-ok; and Kim So Jin (Through The Darkness, The Spy Gone North, The King) as Choi Miryeo, a broadcaster who exposes the Vigilante’s actions.
Tired of seeing the legal system fail, and repeat offenders being set free, Kim Ji-yong decides to step up and do something about it.
He lost his mother who was brutally assaulted by a local gangster when he was young, and after receiving leniency and being released from prison, he decided to personally judge the gangsters who committed crimes. From that day on, he judges criminals who evaded the law and creates justice that the law could not solve in his own way.
Interestingly, Ji-yong is a perfect model student at the National Police University during the day who is good at martial arts, studies, and daily life, but at night he plays a ruthless and cold vigilante.
Nam Joo Hyuk’s Character Preparations
Nam Joo Hyuk immerses into the story by playing polar opposite characters. He portrays a character with two sides. In the character stills released, the contrast is seen in how he wears a hoodie in his “vigilante” persona and looks like an ordinary police academy student donning his uniform.
Challenging the action genre for the first time in his life through ‘Vigilante’, Nam Joo Hyuk spared no effort to create realistic action performances. He had weight training, boxing, judo, and martial arts training. Aiming to express delicate and detailed acting, Nam vividly portrayed a character with complex emotions.
Conveying his fondness for his latest work, Nam Joo Hyuk shared his preparations. He reveals the process of struggling to portray the multi-layered side of Kim Ji-yong, a character with polar opposite qualities.
“I really liked the webtoon called ‘Vigilante’ and I chose it because I really wanted to play the role of Kim Ji-yong. As this is my first action project, I talked a lot about the details with the martial arts team while filming. I think the feeling was very different when I wore a police uniform and when I wore Vigilante clothes. When I was doing Vigilante activities, it was a bit different. I acted with a darker, different seriousness. Rather than expressing intense emotions, I tried to act internally.”
Elaborating the actor’s preparations, director Choi Jung-yul who directed Vigilante also explained the creative process for Ji-yong’s character.
“In the case of the main character, Kim Ji-yong, I thought it would be good to have an actor with sparkling eyes that express the boundary between good and evil well and eyes with sadness inherent in them, and Nam Joo-hyuk expressed them very well. There were many moments that impressed me.”
Vigilante will be released on Disney+ on November 8th and can be seen every Wednesday.
