Brain Works Episodes 5 and 6 Highlights
“In our world, there are many words that are meaningless and yet overrated.”
Han Sung-woo, the victim of their latest murder case, was found dead after he fell over a building’s railings while bleeding profusely from a stab wound to the stomach. His 6-year-old daughter, Ji-yul, who suffers from aphasia, becomes their main suspect. Her mother, Yang Eun-jung, claims that an evil spirit possessed her daughter and forced her to kill her father.
During further investigation, the Neuroscientific Investigations Team discovered that Eun-jung had joined a religious cult and started withdrawing from everyone. Additionally, on the day her husband died, Ji-yul was supposed to undergo an exorcism in exchange for a hefty sum of money.
Myung-Se believes that Ji-yul is innocent, so Ha-ru recommends that he go undercover to collect evidence and expose the cult. Myung-se and Captain Seol pretend to be a wealthy couple in need of a ritual to heal leg paralysis.
“Wanting to rely on someone makes us weak.”
On the day of Ji-yul’s exorcism, Ha-ru manages to sneak out of the building with Ji-yul and Eun-jung and hide them in his house. He promises Eun-jung that he will show her the real reason why Ji-yul is hurting. In the hospital, Ji-yul’s “evil spirit” turns out to be a huge tumor in her ovaries that gives her aphasia and a deranged mental state.
Confirming Ha-ru’s suspicions, madam messenger manipulates Eun-jung to perform the exorcism to get rid of Ji-yul because she saw her on the rooftop when her father died. During interrogation, Eun-Joong admitted that madame messenger killed her husband. She added that she asked her to place the blame on Ji-yul because, as a minor, she would not face criminal charges.
Meanwhile, Ha-ru came across a questionable video clip of Myung-se on his tablet. He is overjoyed that he finally has his weakness in his hands.
Brain Works Episodes 5 and 6 Musings
These episodes bravely dealt with controversies surrounding religious cults and their dark side. The show did an excellent job portraying the power it holds and how it could be highly manipulative and destructive to its followers.
It is also commendable that the story did not end after they escaped the cult. It shows how Eun-Jung struggles after returning to reality from living in a false paradise. As she said, it’s like living every day in a nightmare.
Meanwhile, because the show does contain real medical information, some scenes involving medical equipment are highly technical. It can be challenging to visualize and comprehend how the equipment functions.
Overall, the cases are getting better and better. We also get to see more of Myung-Se and Captain Seol’s interactions, and I’m excited to see how their relationship develops in the upcoming episodes.
