Extraordinary Attorney Woo Episode 6 Highlights
In episode 5, we saw the heartening moment between Young-woo and Su-yeon. The latter has been a patient classmate and colleague for Young-woo.
Now, the two will be working on a case about a North Korean defector charged with injury resulting from robbery.
Per Lawyer Jung’s instructions, Young-woo has to remind Su-yeon to cool her down when needed as she is emotionally invested in the case.
“I already have Asperger syndrome. But at this rate, I’ll probably get carpal tunnel syndrome, too.”
True to what Lawyer Jung said, Young-woo enters a disorderly room of Su-yeon who looks like a tired scholar from working on her case.
Exchanging stories of their tiring workloads, they head to the detention center to meet their client, Gye Hyang-sim. As previously communicated, she is a North Korean defector.
She got involved in a ruckus, but because she has a child, she fled and didn’t serve prison jail time. Hyang-sim prioritized her daughter who was young at that time, she decided to get the punishment when her daughter is old enough to withstand life while she is in prison.
Hearing her story, Young-woo related it to a whale mom with utmost devotion to its offspring. Instead of toning down Su-yeon’s emotions, she joins the goal and insists on getting her probation.
“What is there to worry about when you are the most popular guy at Hanbada?
Meanwhile, Jun-ho is having some girl problems at work and is being teased by Min-woo. Proceeding as planned, Su-yeon and Young-woo meet the public defender who was supposed to defend Mother Gye.
However, he couldn’t be of any help and gave his insights about the difficulty of defending the case. He also shares that the doctor who gave the patient’s diagnosis appears to have prejudiced treatment of North Korean defectors.
Jun-ho joins the duo to meet the victim and witnessed her being beaten by her husband. He also learns from the landlady how the victim has been a punching bag for her husband for the last five years they were renting.
When Su-yeon sensed the beating scene would agitate Young-woo, she protects her right away and sees Jun-ho doing the same. After the chat with the landlady, they get a lead to check the police records. Jun-ho who was about to check on Young-woo halts when Su-yeon called her as well.
At Hanbada, Min-woo suddenly chats with Su-yeon and reveals Jun-ho’s current girl problem. He thinks she could be the person Jun-ho fancies. It made her inwardly happy thinking it could be true.
Competing for brownie points, Su-yeon saves their side by mentioning her judge father who is junior to the presiding judge. They also secure permission to invite the witness to the trial.
“Don’t you think Jun-ho likes Attorney Choi? You don’t know much about that, right? I wonder where my other half is.”
After the initial talk with Presiding Judge Ryu and the prosecutor, Young-woo was called by Min-woo to ask her opinion about Jun-ho and Su-yeon. Quipping Young-woo probably can’t process human attraction, he sighs and wonders about his lack of romance.
While struggling to open bottled water, Young-woo stares at the beaming face of Jun-ho while chatting with Su-yeon.
On the day of the trial, victim Lee Sun-young was summoned by the defendant’s side. Su-yeon goes on to question her, but she claims not to remember the police report incident despite the bruises on her face.
Her lies infuriate Mother Gye who confessed to doing the deed but argues they could have not beaten her black and blue since the police had already come. Emotionally explaining that they were framed because of Sun-young’s ulterior motive, her outburst led to the witness being sent home.
“Whoa whoa! This trial isn’t for you to release your frustration. It’s to get a reduction on your sentence. Think of your daughter who is waiting for you at the orphanage.”
Struggling to calm down Mother Gye, Young-woo subdues her rage by reminding her that her daughter is waiting at the orphanage. If she does not cooperate, they won’t win the case.
Next up to cross-examine the prosecutor’s witness who is the doctor who submitted the medical opinion is Young-woo. Lawyer Jung advises going strong to ensure that his bias against the North Korean defectors will be highlighted.
She sure did and made a favorable impression on the jury by igniting the doctor to blurt his evident chauvinism against North Korean defectors.
Unknown to them, the doctor they grilled is an executive of a company Hanbada also represents and it earned the ire of the senior lawyer who secured that deal.
Reassuring his juniors to focus on the case and not the money the company lost, amazement and respect reflect on Su-yeon and Young-woo while they see Lawyer Jung excuse himself and walk away.
“It is a bit far-fetched. But there is one I can think of.”
Cracking their brains out, Young-woo and Su-yeon face difficulties on how they can fight for the probation of Mother Gye. They go for a long shot and use North Korean law to defend their case.
Citing how North Korean decides the gravity based on the harm or injury caused, Young-woo suggests a year in a North Korean labor camp can work on Mother Gye’s case. As such, it can be translated into a year of community service in South Korea.
Surely establishing a sensible ground, Judge Ryu overruled the prosecutor’s objection to following the North Korean law that the defendant is used to.
However, when the judge asked Mother Gye if her intention is to get the money, she went against the silent coaching of Team Hanbada and confessed that she really intended to get her money at all costs. She also is not aware of the North Korean laws that her lawyers just presented.
Concluding the defense’s stand, Young-woo and Su-yeon decide to stay for the verdict as Lawyer Jung praises both of them for doing a great job.
“It’s not because we’re young attorneys. Its because Gye Hyang-sim is a great mother. Like a mother whale. Mother Gye lacks common sense and does whatever she pleases. Even now, it doesn’t seem like she fully understand what she did wrong. But she chose to be a fugitive for five years to not abandon her child.”
Just then, Young-woo gets her “eureka whale moment” and rushes to where the judge is to request for hearing extension. Fortunately, Su-yeon has a father who is a judge so they were able to meet Judge Ryu.
Seeing them in his office, Judge Ryu refused to speak and advise them to file an appeal. Not backing down, Young-woo follows him and keeps her hand raised to get his attention.
She remarks how Mother Gye never got the money so it does not qualify for robbery. Certainly not liking how they barge in and the arguments they had raised so far, Judge Ryu reminds them that there is a time and place to be passionate as young lawyers.
Responding that maternal instinct is not a reason to mitigate the case, Young-woo explained how Mother Gye only did what she had so she does not abandon her child.
Emphasizing how the client acknowledged her mistake but delayed her prison time so she can take care of her child shows how great she is as a mother. Judge Ryu orders them out and tells them their conversation is not part of the hearing.
Finally, the deliberation ended and Judge Ryu gives the verdict. All the jury members decided on a four-year sentence. Respecting the jury’s decision, Judge Ryu proceeds with the final verdict and declares that Mother Gye will be on probation with 80 hours of community service.
Judge Ryu asserts how Mother Gye confessed to her misdemeanor and returns to claim the punishment, pushing for special factors that affect the decision of the court.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo Episode 6 Musings
This episode’s “whoa-whoa” prescription in Extraordinary Attorney Woo is a sure reminder that when emotions are high, it is best not to go full throttle with your convictions.
No matter how true it can be, it is easy to make mistakes and be irrational.
Apart from the motherly love displayed in this episode, it’s hard not to resonate with the message left about the weight of decisions made coming from a seasoned person. Judge Ryu was an engrossing guest character who provided insightful lessons to Hanbada’s rookie lawyers.
Applying this to our everyday life means respecting the years and tenure of our seniors at work. Their experiences do not have monetary value and are tested by time and previous mistakes.
What To Anticipate Crossing Mid Series?
Accordingly, the series smartly transitions to Young-woo’s inner pains that her world might have not processed fully while presenting an interesting case.
We saw a glimpse of her childhood when she questioned her father about why she doesn’t have a mother, and it was such a heartbreaking scene. When she shares that touching whale story about whale moms choosing not to leave offspring when caught, it was twice harrowing.
Gearing up to connect Tae Su-mi (Jin Kyung), CEO of Taesan Law Firm, to Young-woo; their similar OCD hints at a possible maternal connection.
Through Young-woo, viewers by now would have developed a strange attachment to whales. It’s understandable given the amount of heartening information we have learned from her.
Of course, we are also looking forward to the blossoming romance in the story.
