Dear More Than Friends, stop it. Don’t torture me anymore. I have a frail heart. Until when are we going to be like this? *chuckles
Being Woo-yeon in More Than Friends is equal parts jealousy and frustration. Heading to the second half of the story, the series is as addictive as its first week. A step too late in returning Woo-yeon’s decade-long feelings, Lee Soo gets a dose of his own medicine that I think he really deserves.

“I’ll keep on only giving you gifts like a completely crazy guy.”

Later, sharing the stories that led to her 13th boyfriend, Jin-ju (Baek Soo Min) and Young-hee are infuriated about Lee Soo giving her another heartache on her birthday. Savoring together the happy occasion of Woo-yeon’s new love milestone, the girls chat happily while Jin-ju feels sad being alone when her two friends are blessed with romance.
“I’m not asking you to share everything, just rely on me.”
Troubles keep piling on Lee Soo as a his hand requires recuperation. Sang-hyuk (P.O) reminds the team not to miss his restaurant’s first year anniversary in their group’s chat room. Lee Soo quickly responds not joining.
Young-hee (Ahn Eun Jin) and Hyun-jae (Choi Chan Ho) make amends and the latter vows not to meddle on her affairs, but asks for her to rely on him.
Young-hee: “I’ll be much heavier than what you think.”
Hyun-jae: “I’ll be much stronger than what you think.”
Reconciling with an embrace, the two affirm their love for each other. They even make Jin-ju feel jealous by acting uber sweet in front of her.
“What happened to your arm?”
One by one, the friends enter Sang-hyuk’s resto-bar and finds Lee Soo already sitting there.
Woo-yeon and Joon-soo also arrived, and the latter introduced himself as Woo-yeon’s boyfriend.
Breaking the awkward meeting, the girls go to the bathroom and wonder why Lee Soo came when he initially declared he won’t. Woo-yeon defends Lee-soo for not doing anything wrong and make a stand that she is totally okay with him being there.
Sang-hyuk goes chummy to Joon-soo the CEO, and wonders how he met Woo-yeon. He responds how Woo-yeon deserves to be loved a lot while staring directly at Lee Soo’s eyes.
When Hyun-jae asked Lee-soo to pass the tissue, he noticed his bandaged hand and inquired about it. Sang-hyuk speaks up for the accident Lee Soo had when he went to Namsan tower last weekend.
Joon-soo figures the background of why Woo-yeon left him as well as why she ended up in his embrace on the night of her birthday.
“You can’t ignore time. Definitely not.”
Happily enjoying the meal, Lee Soo is at the front seat of the woman he likes beaming while eating together with her boyfriend.
Noticing the closeness of the friendship circle, Joon-soo points it out and Hyun-jae responds how high school friends tend to have a special connection.
Lee Soo mutters how time is important for relationship. Joon-soo counters how there’s nothing more useless than time passed. *RAWR
Bottles of alcohol after, the friends are all drunk assuming their drunk identities. Joon-soo and Woo-yeon amusingly stare at them and they talk about how Woo-yeon’s intoxicated-self won’t be showing up anymore.
“If you don’t try to reclaim the timing that was lost, it means you lack courage or didn’t care enough.”
Woo-yeon quickly steps out to answer her mom’s phone call and finds Lee Soo on his way to leave. He hands her his birthday gift and she voices out subtle change to him. Happy that she noticed his new haircut, Woo-yeon asks what happened to his hand.
Dismissing it to be nothing, he brings out their previous agreement of not seeing each other as friends, since she’s already dating Joon-soo. He also tells her not to go to the shoots anymore, but Woo-yeon insists on wanting to work hard for the project.
While driving Woo-yeon home, Joon-soo mentions about how timing plays an important part in love. He tells her how it takes courage to act at the right timing.
It turns out that his connection with Woo-yeon traces back to her first love confession to Lee Soo at the airport. About to confess his feelings to the first woman he loved, Joon-soo witnessed Woo-yeon’s failed confession which made him keep his feelings to himself as well. Thereby, leading his first love to become his brother’s wife.
“I don’t want Woo-yeon to be in bad relationship anymore.”
Young-hee learns from Hyun-jae about Lee Soo’s accident and chooses not to tell her friend why Lee Soo stood her up. Her reasoning springs from all those years of seeing Woo-yeon’s heart in pain.
Seeing Woo-yeon find a dependable man who truly cares for her without hesitation, Young-hee decides not to tell her friend less she gets confused again.
“Can you teach me calligraphy?”
Meeting up for their scheduled photo shoot, Lee Soo and Woo-yeon’s plan seems getting bleaker because of the rain that won’t stop. To kill time, and keep more moments with Woo-yeon, he asks her to teach him calligraphy.
Woo-yeon obliges and explains the basics. Lee Soo wrote a note which he deems to be his souvenir for that trip. Muttering his plans to leave again because of having no reason to stay, their conversation was cut by a phone call from a film company.
Getting a job to work on a title of a horror film, Woo-yeon goes for a surprise visit to Joon-soo. Faintly whining how she is nothing frugal except for giving her heart, Woo-yeon plants a swift kiss on his cheek, making Joon-soo smile.
She also promised to watch a movie with him wearing his gift shoes after her photo shoot with Lee Soo in two days.
“I’m sure he won’t want you hurting either.”
Struggling to finish reading the materials for her horror film calligraphy project, Woo-yeon was deprived of sleep making her half an hour late to meet Lee Soo. She apologizes profusely but Lee Soo shrugs it off. Noticing her wearing heels, he asks if it’s okay to wear that.
She responds that she will have a date with Joon-soo later so she wants to wear them since the shoes are his gift. Hearing her reply, Lee Soo switches to a raging mood, whining about her not being on time. The mercurial change surprised Woo-yeon who can’t process the situation as Lee Soo being jealous.
Passing on a metal craft store, Woo-yeon gets startled to the sound of the metal being forged. She mentions to Lee Soo how she struggled to sleep because of her latest project. T
he sound of hammered metal still bother Woo-yeon, so Lee Soo uses his hands to cover her ears and whispers something that Woo-yeon was not able to hear. She asked what he just told her, but he gave his signature reply of nothing.
“Why is your heart racing?”
The long walk finally reflects on Woo-yeon’s feet so she rests on a nearby stair. Lee Soo moved to where she is sitting with a paper bag and just know that her feet have been tortured.
He helps her wear new comfortable shoes while placing band-aids on her wounded heels. He mildly scolds her of how being comfortable on a date is better than looking pretty.
Continuing their neighborhood exploration, Lee Soo is engrossed to capture photos so he did not see an approaching vehicle. Woo-yeon who sees it hurriedly pushes him to a nearby wall.
Their close proximity made Lee Soo’s heart beat faster with Woo-yeon aware of it since her hand was placed on his chest.
“I was hung up on someone who would never love me.”
Nearing the end of their shoot that day, Woo-yeon receives a phone call from Joon-soo. He, unfortunately, is tied up to a dinner with reporters so he can’t watch the movie with her.
Dragging Lee Soo to sit with her, he asks if he has been so bad to her. Woo-yeon replies that it was not his fault but hers to be so caught up loving someone who does not feel the same.
The two decide to watch the movie together, but just as Lee Soo finished ordering the pop corn and drink, Joon-soo arrives telling his girlfriend that he ditched the meeting to have a date with her.
“Do you really like him?”
Deducing the situation, Lee Soo tells Woo-yeon from afar that he will go his way.
In conflicted emotions, Woo-yeon excuses herself and chases after Lee Soo telling she will go to the rest room. She spots Lee Soo just as Joon-soo realizes Woo-yeon went to the other side and not to the rest room.
Lee Soo drags her inside a nearby photo booth so as not to make Joon-soo misunderstands when he sees him approaching.
He stares at Woo-yeon’s eyes and asked her if she truly likes Joon-soo. She faintly nods averting his eyes.
Then, he finally says the three words Woo-yeon has been waiting to hear all those years.
“I like you,” Lee Soo said. He thinks inwardly of how her love curse that day when she kissed him at Jeju island seemed to have transferred on him.
It turns out, on that day he covered her ears, he told Woo-yeon the very same thing.
“I like you. I wanted to tell you that. Just once.”
More Than Friends Episode 7 Musings
I know More Than Friends would claim my Best Romance K-Drama shoutout this year, overtaking The King: Eternal Monarch and Crash Landing on You as my top pick. While not as imaginatively conceived or deftly directed, the narrative and portrayals have so much heart reminiscent of my other all-time favorites: Because This Is My First Life and Discovery Of Love.
Every week since its premiere, I look forward to weekend because I get to have my servings of the series. Nothing flashy, nothing grand – just its pure and heartfelt storytelling, made me really rave a lot about More Than Friends.
Its cliff-hanging twists are not something mind-blowing, but totally pierces to anyone, who has experienced the same love confusing scenario in the series.
I definitely can’t wait how the writer would lay down the rightful closures for each character. Hopefully, the convincing points as to how the final love realization would be achieved in the series would not let us down.
Even I agreed with Young-hee in her decision not to tell the reason why Lee Soo failed to show up. Woo-yeon is just in nature so week in processing her emotions. While I admire her steadfast devotion, I really hope for her to realize that she is worth loving – a whole-hearted love that promises beautiful memories.
Episode 8 previews a clinching moment that aptly signals heavier love emotions to ponder down the stretch of More Than Friends.
