My Sweet Mobster Episodes 13 and 14 Highlights

“I am the elder brother of the girl he killed.”

As we come to learn, the reason the man from the bakery shop holds a grudge against Dong-hee is because he believes Dong-hee killed his younger sister. While on a trip to the beach, the two of them got into an accident and unfortunately, the young girl lost her life and only Dong-hee survived. After that, Dong-hee was punished for driving as a minor and lived in guilt even after he was released. Back then, Hyun-woo was the prosecutor in charge of the case. Which is how he got acquainted with Dong-hee.

Thankfully, with Hyun-woo and Ji-hwan’s intervention, the man leaves the company. But revisiting that painful memory shakes up Dong-hee deeply. To comfort Dong-hee, Eun-ha tells him about her neighborhood oppa “Hyun-woo.”

Albeit by mistake, she caused him to move out of the neighborhood. (She inadvertently led Yang-hi to Ji-hwan’s house.) After that, Eun-ha kept missing “Hyun-woo” and felt bad about what she did to him. However, Eun-ha realized that the best thing she could do for “Hyun-woo” was to lead a good life and live happily. Thus, Dong-hee should do the same for his late friend, who would be sad to see him in pain.

In another touching scene, Hyun-woo admits to having been wrong about Ji-hwan and the deer squad. He thought criminals wouldn’t change, but they proved him wrong. Further, our leading men shake hands. resolving to cooperate to catch Yang-hi and protect Eun-ha.

“You thought I wouldn’t find out if you didn’t tell me?”

The parallels between Ji-hwan and “Hyun-woo” keep piling up to the point Eun-ha can’t brush it off as a coincidence anymore. By now, Eun-ha is almost certain that Ji-hwan and her neighborhood oppa are one and the same. She meets Hyun-woo to check with him. But it isn’t like she needed to hear it in person. Deep in her heart, Eun-ha knew the truth already.

After parting ways with Hyun-woo, Eun-ha rushes over to see Ji-hwan. Tears welled up in her eyes as she apologized for not recognizing him, though Ji-hwan was the only one she could rely on both in the past and now. Ji-hwan says he missed her too, taking Eun-ha in his arms and cupping her head. It is such an emotional scene made sweeter by a montage of their flashbacks together.

Another ship sailing smoothly is II-young and Mi-ho. Having made a slip of the tongue, Mi-ho figures II-young has been aware of her pregnancy all along. She gets disappointed, thinking that II-young only pursued her because of the baby and not because he likes her. II-young reassures Mi-ho that isn’t the case. Having grown up as an orphan, II-young was scared of starting a family of his own. But if it is with Mi-ho, II-young can muster up the courage.

In a funny sequence, our secondary couple gets caught red-handed by Mi-ho’s father, who has been fond of II-young before but changes his mind after learning that II-young works at Thirsty Deer, a company for ex-convicts. Still, with some help from Ji-hwan, stepping in as II-young’s elder brother figure, and some coaxing from Mi-ho’s mother, Mi-ho’s father gives them his blessing.

The thought of Mi-ho and II-young getting married gets the wheels turning in Eun-ha’s mind. She also wants to marry Ji-hwan and start a family together. But when Eun-ha low-key brings up marriage, a clueless Ji-hwan says the deer squad can’t do without him. Hence, he plans to marry them off before getting married himself. Way to go Ji-hwan, getting married after turning 50.

The next morning, Eun-ha wakes up to the delightful news of her channel hitting 10K subscribers. She is jumping for joy, yet the marriage issue dampens her mood. Luckily, Ji-hwan realizes his mistake quickly, buying Eun-ha a necklace (and hilariously forgetting it in the office) and surprising her with a bouquet of sunflowers, Eun-ha’s favorite. Well. Eun-ha surprised him too, though the timing was off, showing up while Ji-hwan was changing his clothes.

“What are you doing at my company?”

It is cute and heart-flattering when couples promise to stay glued to each other forever. But in the penultimate weeks, it is an ominous sign that things are going to turn dark soon. Tracing back the suspicious man who was lurking around the house and taking photos, Ji-hwan connects him to his father. Given the fact that it was Ji-hwan who threw his father in jail, anyone can guess that Ji-hwan’s father is up to no good. Still, for the sake of protecting Eun-ha and the deer squad, Ji-hwan enters the lion’s den voluntarily once again and goes to meet his father.

The father wants to get his son back, yet the son has already chosen a different path. Still, it isn’t like Ji-hwan’s father will give up that easily. Gathering back the old members of the gang, Ji-hwan’s father barges into the company. Things soon escalate into an ugly fight between those who cowardly jump ships to Ji-hwan’s father’s side and those who resolve to stay on Ji-hwan’s side.

To break up the fight, Ji-hwan smashes a glass, getting his hand injured. The conference room, which was teeming with people before, is now empty and resignation letters from those turning their backs on Ji-hwan are flooding in. Ji-hwan is devastated and can barely breathe, watching everything he worked hard on crumble before his eyes. And I wish I could pass through the screen and console him.

Elsewhere, Eun-ha holds an offline event to celebrate reaching 10K subscribers. Originally, Ji-hwan promised to join Eun-ha after work. But no thanks to that ruckus, he couldn’t make it. Hearing about what happened at the company, Hyun-woo gets worried about Eun-ha and goes to the event venue.

It is a good thing he did as Yang-hi’s men attack Eun-ha and almost kidnap her if not for Hyun-woo’s intervention. We end the penultimate week with Hyun-woo collapsing down after getting hit by a brick on his head, Yang-hi and his men making a run for it, and Ji-hwan arriving to witness Eun-ha holding a bleeding Hyun-woo. What a wild turn of events.

My Sweet Mobster Episodes 13 and 14 Musings

We already knew things would eventually reach this point, but that didn’t make it hit less hard. I feel for Ji-hwan. The poor guy just found his happiness and was taking baby steps toward Eun-ha and considering getting married only to get hit by that terrible storm. Yang-hi’s impulsive and reckless actions are one thing, but the real adversary here is Ji-hwan’s father, who keeps turning scarier as time passes.

Ji-hwan’s father might have scolded Yang-hi when he brought up kidnapping Eun-ha to get Ji-hwan. But it wasn’t out of benevolence, but since he had a more cunning plan in mind. Seriously! Wasn’t it enough confining Ji-hwan all that time and forcing him to commit crimes? Can’t our poor guy catch a break already?

With only one week left, I hope we won’t be getting any sort of noble idiocy, separation, or time skips. The situation might be challenging and tough to pull through. But I have faith in our good people squad. If they join hands together and act as one, the baddies won’t be able to get them. Also, seeing how Yang-hi keeps getting irritated by Ji-hwan’s father’s ill-treatment of him, the power struggle at the baddies’ camp might as well cause their own downfall without our good people squad having to do anything.
