Our Blooming Youth Episodes 5 and 6 Highlights
Previously, Sung-on gives a lecture on a possible serial killing based on the recent murders in the capital. Discernful Jae-yi contradicts her betrothed’s thought and is set to compete in solving the case.
“His highness said you are a man of many talents and you are very skillful, so I’m sure you are good at shoveling. Isn’t that, right?”
Meeting Myung-jin and Ga-ram, she relays her intention for them to help her with the case. They are also set to excavate the corpse the next day.
Jae-yi reports it to Lee Hwan who declared a handsome, talented and almost perfect Scholar Park will be joining them as well. It turns out that Lee Hwan goes incognito as Scholar Park from Namsangol.
At the burial place, Myung-jin assigned shoveling to Lee Hwan who of course thinks it is a preposterous idea. He tries to seek Jae-yi’s help, but she adorably emphasized how he boasted his qualifications earlier.
Obviously, Lee Hwan does not have experience shoveling. So, Jae-yi takes over to hasten their task. Myung-jin assessed how the man was stabbed again after being killed, and inside one of his hands, they found the letter.
It seems the serial killer holds grudges against the Song family. But they need conclusive details to help assess the situation.
“To friendship, family and love. Cheers!”
Worrying about the curfew and their hungry tummies, they follow Myung-jin’s lead to eat at a late-night tavern. Upholding Joseon law, Lee Hwan refused to eat, but his company’s coaxing led him to relent. Not to mention that the yummy food was not bad at all.
Surprised to see Jae-yi enjoying liquor, Lee Hwan got dragged to play quick hide-and-seek against the patrolling officers by his tipsy eunuch.
Babbling how her heart races because of alcohol, Jae-yi is oblivious to Lee Hwan’s similar emotion but not because of alcohol, but their close proximity.
Heading back to the palace, they see Sung-on’s office still lit up. Hwan checks on his friend who takes the opportunity to reveal the compass. From there, the Crown Prince realized his friend lied to him by not confessing it right away.
“Do you know how much your trust means to me? If you turn your back on me, I could die today.”
Surmising about the pattern of the Cardinal Point serial killing, Jae-yi remembered Hwan’s words about the almanac and figured the next victim to be a woman about to give birth. She joins Sung-on and just what she predicted, an assassin almost endangered a mother and her newly-born child.
In the process of saving lives, Jae-yi got harmed just in time when Lee Hwan and Tae-gang arrived. Carrying his eunuch, Hwan refuses Sung-on’s offer to carry Jae-yi.
Lee Hwan nurses Jae-yi who was out for a day. Affirming if he can already trust her, the prince confessed he already did for a while. Tears run down Jae-yi’s face finally gaining the trust she so wanted to achieve.
Responding to her question about when she gained his trust, Lee Hwan tells her how he might have trusted her right away as he believes his teacher won’t raise a murderer as a daughter.
They both reminisce about the greatness of Minister Han as a teacher and as a father. Unknown to them, Minister Cho already learned that Go Sun-dol is dead already.
“Follow me. There’s something you need to do.”
Casting his protection towards Jae-yi openly; Lee Hwan makes sure she does not do heavy palace work. He gives an excuse that she needs to do an errand for him, but she’ll end up just sitting with him while he reads. Adorably taking care of Jae-yi, he gives another gift, this time tangerine which is a rare Joseon fruit.
Of course, other eunuchs notice the special treatment. So, they pick on her but the Crown Prince is always there to save the day.
Proceeding to his promise of listening to her family’s story after she solved the case, Jae-yi shared her side of the story which is too different from the stories of her family’s servant and friend that was claimed to be her lover.
Lee Hwan also reveals the “ghost letter” to her. Reading it, Jae-yi fully empathized with how lonely and hard his life has been not knowing who to fight. On her end, she vowed that she did not have any lover and that the person framed to be her lover is just a brother who taught her sword fighting.
Baring his fears is backed up by how powerful and evil his enemies are; Jae-yi promised to protect him and be by his side. Lee Hwan asserts she needs to recover her memories since she needs to get to the bottom of her family’s poisoning.
Checking on the mother and child that she saved, Jae-yi bumps into Sung-on and sees the marriage consent form her father sent. Before she can even complete her question if he will give his betrothed a chance, he coldly responds that his bride-to-be is dead and committed an unforgivable crime.
Investigating the shaman’s room, Jae-yi found strange flower petals inside the incense burner. At that same moment, Lee Hwan and Sung-on both learn that Jae-yi’s supposed lover committed suicide. His suicide note claims that he is Jae-yi’s lover.
Our Blooming Youth Episodes 5 and 6 Musings
We have to give credit to the villain of Our Blooming Youth for giving furtive and blatant attacks sparingly. As the series shapes into the romance that would happen between Lee Hwan and Jae-yi, the prince gets another problem to tackle aside from the piles of concern he already has.
Alongside this development is expected heartbreak and a strained relationship that would emerge between Sung-on and Lee Hwan. Considering Sung-on to be a decent man, once the truth about Jae-yi is revealed, the unexpected love triangle is definitely going to be problematic.
For historical newbie kdrama watchers, the flow of the story might look baffling. Joseon has high regard for superstition and shamanism; thus, Lee Hwan’s fear is grounded, not to mention, how the words in the cursed letter have started unfolding.
Indeed, Jae-yi’s plight is not going to be easy. Her journey is a series of difficult tests that she needs to survive. On top of that, she needs to convince Lee Hwan, who doesn’t trust people easily
Witness how Lee Hwan and Jae-yi uncover the secrets and fight against their enemies in Our Blooming Youth every Monday and Tuesday on tvN.
