Our Blooming Youth Episodes 9 and 10 Highlights
Previously, at the interrogation of the shaman, the King confronts a curse and a suicide in front of the government officials.
The shaman’s words also manifest as a plum tree in the palace suddenly getting inflamed.
Receiving an earful from the King, Lord Cho, and his cohort remain indignant to his fury.
The King asserts the shaman’s claim to be possessed by a ghost from the Song family can only be traced to them since they were in charge of arresting that person 10 years ago.
Jae-yi gets rescued by Ga-ram and Myung-jin on time. She rushes to the palace worried about Lee Hwan and figures the enemies of the royal family are not just plotting evil directed to the crown prince but at the entire royal family.
“Be careful. Do not get hurt. You’ll need that money. You lost three nyangs, didn’t you?”
The officials on the kings’ side convene to discuss reinvestigation of the Byeokcheon case which involved the Song family. They also want to take the opportunity in weakening Lord Cho’s power.
What’s strange is that Lord Cho and his cohorts seem not to know about the shaman and the possibility that they did not eradicate all the members of Byeokcheon thieves might be true.
Lee Hwan and Jae-yi also notice the similarities in the suicide cases of the shaman and Jae-yi’s framed lover. The presence of peony flower petals and how their hair turned white, along with the poison used to attack the crown prince raise red flags that can’t be disregarded.
They later meet Myung-jin who suggests three things that can prolong fire and set forth to investigate the sources. Unknown to them, Lord Cho’s man has reported their whereabouts and is also assigned to tail Jae-yi.
Turning a crisis into an opportunity to denounce the King’s shallow authority, Lord Cho summoned his nephew to the capital to lead a protest as a scholar. At the meeting with the King, Lord Cho proposes a humble meal for the royal family to appease the growing woes of the public.
“If I didn’t want to lose you, I had to trust you. Will you be my friend again?”
Together with Myung-jin and Ga-ram, Jae-yi proceeds with the investigation about the recent purchaser of niter, sulfur and beeswax.
Their investigation points to Minister Han Jung-eon, Sung-on’s father. He was summoned for questioning per Lord Cho’s manipulation.
Lee Hwan and Jae-yi arrive on time to prove Lord Han’s innocence. They go to the family’s storage room to reveal the items that were bought in preparation for the wedding that was canceled.
Ordering the Royal Inspector to relay the result of the impromptu organization, Lee Hwan also declared that he will report it personally to the King.
Sung-on thanks his friend for trusting him. The crown prince replies to his recent learnings from Jae-yi about trust and vows that as he is bound to trust him as a close friend. Lee Hwan also asks if they can be friends again to which Sung-on responds that his friendship with him had never wavered.
Intending to disregard the fear instigated by the cursed letter, Lee Hwan declares that he will make a miracle every day by having him as a friend. He promises to trust and protect him.
Noticing Lee Hwan’s happy mood for reuniting with his friend, Jae-yi was also asked by the crown prince if they can be friends. But remembering how she was kicked out by him; she demands a long and heartfelt apology. While she blabs about the reasons why he had to do so, inwardly, Lee Hwan surmises how he misses her and how he wonders if she thinks of him. He also admits how the palace feels empty without her.
Realizing Lee Hwan walked her home, she rushes to escort him back to the palace but he tells her that he takes into consideration that she is a woman. He also tells her that a late snack has been prepared for her as well.
“If you are going to be the king, make a law that people getting married should meet first.”
Happily munching on the food, Jae-yi brazenly treats herself to alcohol. When she got a little tipsy, she shares thoughts about Sung-on. She also clarifies that despite him being a good man, marriage was not really her choice.
She advises Lee Hwan to make sure he likes his future princess, but he remarks he’ll do as he pleases. That did not sit well with tipsy Jae-yi who makes another suggestion that if he becomes a king; he should make a law that people should be acquainted first before tying the knot. She asserts going to bases of physical intimacy as well to check the chemistry.
Conveying how she wants to live as a eunuch with a purpose, and not hide behind her brother’s name, she is happy to be able to voice her opinion and save lives. She continues her adorable blab of just serving Lee Hwan as the head eunuch when he becomes a king.
Reasoning her temper might not be good for Sung-on, in case he gets a second wife, Lee Hwan can only agree to her assessment that indeed, she is really quite a handful.
“Song isn’t like that. He would never kill you. He is not the leader of the thieves. It’s just a dream.”
The next day Lee Hwan reports to his father, but Lord Cho also joins his meeting to defend himself. The King sides with the minister after weighing their arguments.
Discerning something important about the event of Byeokcheon thieves, he asks Sung-on to bring the journal of the events. Still, something does not add up, especially when the historian of the event was from Byeokcheon. Coincidentally, the shaman and the man who tampered with the written prayer both hailed from Byeokcheon.
With her entourage, the Queen stares at the pond teeming with fish that the King gifted her. When she sees Lord Cho from afar, she declares cryptic thoughts that her son will not be used by her uncle for his selfish purpose.
On her way back to the palace, the Queen sees lamps being brought to Prince Myung-an’s room who just had a nightmare. Assuaging her son, she tells him not to be scared as she knows Song would never do what he’s scared of.
Meanwhile, Jae-yi escorts a eunuch from Byeokcheon for some questions. Surprisingly, the private meeting was reported by Lee Hwan’s head court lady.
Our Blooming Youth Episodes 9 and 10 Musings
With open and hidden enemies, the puzzle pieces in Our Blooming Youth heighten intrigue and worry for the crown prince.
The curious gossip trail that has been circulating in the palace finally names some of the players involving court ladies and royal guards. What’s alarming is the revelation that Lee Hwan’s head court lady appears to be not on his side.
Or if she is feeding details to the Queen who seems to be putting a different face to her greedy uncle, the conspiracy is also tricky if it involves the thieves in Byeokcheon.
The Queen looks closely affiliated with Song, the presumed leader of the bandits. Thus, it’s vague whose side is she on. And if the information circulating is going to her or to Lord Cho.
Tae-gang’s unfathomable expression finding Jae-yi and Lee Hwan happily chatting is also a red flag. As we have seen the palace people exchanging notes with a royal guard participating, it raises concern as to where his loyalty really lies.
A lesson on aspiring personal goals as a woman was highlighted by alcohol-loving Jae-yi in this episode. Her progressive thinking easily convinces us that we can just forego the romance intended for her in the series since she has noble goals to achieve.
Ga-ram is also in a precarious situation, and it is quite distressing since it would play to Lord Cho’s advantage.
Can Lee Hwan and Jae-yi solve the inscrutable mysteries being thrown at them when they don’t seem to know the enemies inside the palace?
Witness how Lee Hwan and Jae-yi uncover the secrets and fight against their enemies in Our Blooming Youth every Monday and Tuesday on tvN.
