Spring Fever Episodes 3 and 4 Highlights
“Are you the guy who was with Se-jin?”
Jae-gyu recognizes the guy with Se-jin as Choi I-jun (Cha Seo-won). The two were high school classmates, and I-jun helped Jae-gyu babysit Han-gyul, as there was no one to look after him at home, and Jae-gyu had to bring him to school. Starting as friends, Jae-gyu and I-jun ended up drifting apart after Jae-gyu ran off with I-jun’s money. But there is likely more to that incident than meets the eye, given how I-jun has tracked Jae-gyu down tenaciously for 10 years, and how Jae-gyu now gives back the money but staunchly refuses to apologize.
Interestingly, I-jun is the fan club president of Bom’s mother, a famous actress. And he met Bom while preparing for an event and instantly got smitten. Not that she even remembers him. What is with Bom running into our leading men and then forgetting about it? At least she now remembers her first encounter with Jae-gyu, though she pretends not to.
Having ensured Se-jin is safe and sound and that I-jun isn’t some strange guy but her elder brother, Jae-gyu drives Bom and Han-gyul to a hotel to get some rest. Things happen, and Jae-gyu saves a kid from drowning. But the boy gets scared. And his mother slaps Jae-gyu without thanking him or even asking for an explanation.
Bom, having been there before, wonders why Jae-gyu didn’t stand up for himself. But he counters that what matters is that the kid is safe. Still, Bom follows after the mother and has her apologize to Jae-gyu after checking the CCTV footage.
“You don’t have to hide it.”
Being misunderstood is a habitual occurrence for Jae-gyu. But rather than getting mad or fighting the gossipers, Jae-gyu takes it in stride. Yet it surely hurts. Satisfyingly, the drama doesn’t leave us hanging and shows Jae-gyu’s side of the story. And the more we get to know him, the more compassionate he seems. He is the softest-hearted person in town, but the residents fail to recognize this because of their bias.
The latest rumor in town has it that Han-gyul is Jae-gyu’s hidden son, not his nephew. Earlier, Bom spotted a call on Jae-gyu’s phone from a woman. And now she suspects the woman is Han-gyul’s supposed birth mother. We know it isn’t true, but Bom can’t take it off her mind.
Running into Jae-gyu, she mistakes his desperate efforts to save a tiny puppy for damaging public property. Taking off his shirt to dry off the puppy, Bom notices a burn scar on Jae-gyu’s shoulder and another one on his wrist, which is probably why he wears a sleeve. She urges him not to hide his scar, as it is a testament to how much he endured.
Having confirmed the puppy will be fine, Jae-gyu and Bom grab a bite to eat, where she suggests they have drinks together, to his amazement. By now, Bom is no longer swayed by the rumors and deems Jae-gyu righteous and trustworthy.
“I finally remembered you.”
Dolled up, Bom acts friendly and even makes a lettuce wrap for Jae-gyu, getting him excited. He thinks she is about to confess to liking him. But what Bom meant is that she remembers their first encounter. She thanks him for that day and apologizes for pretending not to remember. But when Jae-gyu asks about what happened to her in Seoul, Bom gets defensive and spews mean words at him.
Their separation doesn’t last long, though, as Bom suffers from some annoying wasps and Jae-gyu swoops in to help her, but under a discreet identity, “The Heir Of The Wasp Family.” But of course, he is busted and gets scolded by Bom for his unwanted help.
Meanwhile, I-jun drops by Bom’s house to thank her for taking care of Se-jin. He brings her a lunchbox containing chicken soup. Bom finds the taste familiar to that of her father’s chicken soup, but has no idea that her parents sent it through I-jun.
In return for helping them out, I-jun asks Bom’s parents about the reason their family got torn apart. (So much for telling Bom that he doesn’t ask people personal questions, as some things are painful to bring up.) Anyway, Bom’s parents share with I-jun the issue about the student’s father and how his wife humiliated Bom in public.
Back then, Bom wanted to sue them and clear her name. But her parents stopped her. So, she cut them off. And now that they have finally learned her whereabouts, Bom’s parents hand over the evidence she gathered to I-jun (who is a lawyer), asking him to disclose the truth.
“Team white, are you ready to win?”
The school’s sports festival is around the corner. Everyone on the winning team will get medals this time. So, the competition is intense. Han-gyul and Se-jin are on different teams. And their guardians are set on winning. Hilariously, each of Jae-gyu and I-jun thinks Bom is on their team, and volunteers to lead their individual teams. Yet their methods can’t be more different. While I-jun bribes the students with trendy desserts, Jae-gyu trains the students vigorously.
Jae-gyu is desperate to win and impress Bom. But Han-gyul only wants Se-jin to smile at him. Yet, she acts mean and is so obsessed with beating him that it starts to feel annoying. To placate Se-jin, Han-gyul tries to talk his uncle out of participating. And hearing that Bom is on the other team, Jae-gyu backs off and even gives winning tips to I-jun. But just then, Bom shows up, announcing she is on Jae-gyu and Han-gyul’s team. So, it seems Jae-gyu is about to eat his words about not participating.
Spring Fever Episodes 3 and 4 Musings
The love triangle is tiresome. But we are intrigued by Jae-gyu and I-jun’s dynamics. They balk at each other as archenemies, but they are actually frenemies. Deny it as they may, those two guys care about each other a lot, even if all they do when they meet is pick childish fights.
The Han-gyul/Se-jin story arc started interesting, but it needs something besides studying and grades to keep it going. Also, both Se-jin and Han-gyul have some character growth to do. She needs to stop acting spoiled and express her real feelings. And he needs to stand up for himself and stop being a pushover. Still, the drama has plenty of time ahead; perhaps it will win us over with this ship.
Last but not least, Jae-gyu is shaping up to be our latest green flag oppa. He might be tacky and doesn’t know how to court women. But he is sincere and tender-hearted. And while raising their adorable little puppy (Bom-sik) together, our leads are bound to grow closer and resolve their misunderstandings.
