Spring Fever Episodes 7 and 8 Highlights
“So, we are good now?”
The mysterious woman is indeed Han-gyul’s birth mother, yet she isn’t Jae-gyu’s ex as town folks suspect, but his elder sister. When Jae-gyu was in high school, his sister dumped Han-gyul on him, promising to make money and return for them. But he didn’t hear from her again.
In the present, Jae-gyu lies to Bom about the woman being an insurance agent. And we aren’t fond of this lie or the vow to wait until Han-gyul graduates, even after all that progress. Still, given their current state, our leads will probably get caught soon. We mean, how can people not catch on when Jae-gyu walks around grinning from ear to ear with a spring in his step? But his big smile turns into a frown after hearing that I-jun went to the school as a guest speaker, and Bom gave him a standing ovation for his speech.
“I have always wanted to go to an amusement park with my boyfriend.”
As the teacher in charge of the energy club, Bom schedules a field trip to the power plant where Jae-gyu works. She tries to act cold so the students won’t notice anything. But Jae-gyu keeps asking about her opinion. Then, he reveals his identity as the power plant’s CEO, stunning everyone with his successful career. Han-gyul tries to woo Se-jin, too. Yet she turns him down, denying her crush despite getting butterflies in her stomach and barely being able to focus on her studies.
Nervous, Bom tries to call off the first date with Jae-gyu. (They agreed to spend a day together before returning to being teacher and parent.) But he urges her to trust him, promising to plan everything thoroughly so they don’t run into anyone they know. Excited, Jae-gyu shows up at Bom’s doorstep at dawn, and they head to see the sunrise together. But this is drama land, so they bump into townsfolk everywhere they go.
Despite the setbacks, our leads’ first date ends on a cheerful note. They say their goodbyes, planning to wait for 2 years before pursuing their relationship. Although we find the waiting issue annoying, we can see where our leads come from. The townsfolk are nosy and irritating, and they will spread rumors and give Bom hell for dating a student’s parent/parent figure. Not to mention their dislike for Jae-gyu.
“It is that woman.”
Taking Bom-sik for a walk, Bom runs into Jae-gyu’s sister and realizes that he lied to her. Mad, Bom gives Jae-gyu one last chance. Either tell her the truth, or they are over. Learning that the mysterious woman is Jae-gyu’s estranged sister and Han-gyul’s mother, Bom urges him to tell Han-gyul that his mother is alive. But Jae-gyu is totally against it. And we can see why. That woman only came back for her inheritance and not to see her son. And she promises not to show up again if Jae-gyu gives her what she wants.
Still, Bom has a point of view. No matter how terrible that woman is, Han-gyul misses his mother. And he will feel betrayed to realize Jae-gyu has been deceiving him. The uncle-nephew dynamics were one of our favorite plotlines, so the twist of Han-gyul’s mother turning out alive is pretty annoying.
“Now that you know I am okay, stop crying.”
A typhoon hits the town, causing a power outage. So, everyone retreats to Jae-gyu’s house as it is the only place with electricity, thanks to the solar panels. Bom is missing, though, and no one knows her whereabouts. Both Jae-gyu and I-jun go looking for her, but I-jun finds her first and saves her from a falling sign.
When Bom reaches Jae-gyu’s place, he lashes out at her for going outside amidst the heavy rain, and she argues she had her reasons. Unbeknownst to Jae-gyu, Bom was searching for the gift he gave her on their date. But he hurts her with his harsh words instead of just saying he was jealous that I-jun located her first.
Or maybe not, because it turns out Jae-gyu is the one who reached Bom first and shielded her from the sign with his body. But she fainted and had no way of knowing this. Jae-gyu got injured and had to get his wound treated, so he entrusted Bom to I-jun and went to see a doctor.
Clarifying things out, all is well between our leads again. But this week ends on a tragic note as Han-gyul comes across some documents that indicate his mother is alive. He confronts his uncle about it, but the week concludes before we can hear Jae-gyu’s response.
Spring Fever Episodes 7 and 8 Musings
Lying to Han-gyul that his parents were dead was wrong. But Jae-gyu couldn’t bring himself to tell Han-gyul that his mother had abandoned him and gone to Seoul. And given her selfishness, Han-gyul’s mother might lie to him and claim she tried to get him back, but Jae-gyu refused to let her see him. What a messy situation.
Another exasperating plotline is how Han-gyul plans to come in second deliberately to make Se-jin happy. That isn’t right on multiple levels. And Se-jin won’t feel satisfied if Han-gyul lets her beat him. If anything, this arc is boring, and the story should find something else to progress Se-jin and Han-gyul’s relationship.
