The Law Cafe Episode 9 Highlights

“The world is changing. If we must, we should have a debate and change the system.”

Accepting Yu-ri’s reaction, Jung-ho asks her not to leave his side. She bawls her eyes out at Se-yeon’s house, thinking about what she and her mom have been doing to find a lawyer who can take their case in the past.

In the news, Chief Prosecutor Kim gets released easily on the basis that what he did wasn’t severe even though he clearly misused his power for Dohan Group.

Yu-ri attends the disciplinary hearing and she defends herself after being accused of violating the Attorney-at-law act. Jung-ho also comes to sit by her side, and defend themselves by providing facts about the said violations.

In the end, Yu-ri gets reprimanded by the association, and she is still angry with Jung-ho for keeping the truth for how many years.

Though they are prohibited from mentioning Jung-ho, the Happy Mart ladies forward their concern to Yu-ri about losing their lodge money on digital currency. Yu-ri takes their situation as a fraud case since there was still deception by omission.

“You have to make sacrifices in order to get something you want.”

Adding to the problems forwarded to her, Yu-ri also tries to mediate with the salon owner whose hair got pulled out by the ladies. Though aggravated, the salon owner was still accommodating to Yu-ri, even sharing who her teacher in stocks is.

Paying a visit to the shaman the lady told her about, Yu-ri was unconvinced at first, but later gets drawn in as she and Joon see the accuracy of the shaman’s words.

Chairman Lee meets Jung-ho after 20 years, and he acknowledges his grandson’s will to bring down his father. He asks Jung-ho to fix the damage he has made and work for Dohan, but Jung-ho rejects the offer. However, his attention gets pulled when Chairman Lee mentions Yu-ri.

Frustrated with Chairman Lee’s treatment of him, President Lee barges in drunk at the law cafe, provoking Yu-ri who hits him and calls the police.

Jung-ho arrives and gets into a brawl with his uncle, and Yu-ri recalls what the shaman said of two men fighting over her.

Despite his concern for her, Yu-ri remains to be angry with Jung-ho who apologizes for loving her.

“It’s not the victim’s fault. It’s wrong to scam people.”

Now believing the shaman, Yu-ri gets persuaded into performing an exorcism to drive away the bad spirits surrounding her.

Coming back to the law cafe, the owner of the hair salon panics as the stocks she invested in getting delisted. Overhearing it, the ladies attack her in the cafe.

At the police station, Yu-ri also finds Woo-jin scammed into investing a large sum of money. Se-yeon sees Yu-ri and scolds her in public. Jung-ho also gets angry at his tenants, but later revokes his victim-blaming attitude, going easy on Yu-ri.

Able to look at the scammer’s past records, Yu-ri goes with Jung-ho to his publishing house. There, she realizes that the author ‘Whistleblower’ is Jung-ho.

Shaman Maru has past records of fraud but was later actually possessed in the prison.

Going undercover in the gambling house, Jung-ho, Eun-gang, and the ladies’ team up in catching the shaman. With no money left after losing several times, Jung-ho triggers the shaman by calling out his greed.

“They say desperation blinds you. It must be true.”

Raising the stakes, Jung-ho gets caught cheating. Confident in his standing, he provokes the shaman by replying about how it feels to be tricked.

For a while, Jung-ho gets shaken by the shaman’s correct guess about stabbing his father’s back. The situation escalates as the shaman waves his knife at Jung-ho, and Yu-ri jumps to block it. Woo-jin gets slashed in his shoulder area as he also jumps to protect Yu-ri.

The police arrive, and they rejoice as Se-yeon tells them about the possibility of retrieving their money back.

Amid their happiness, Jung-ho receives a call from President Lee who is about to turn his back on his own father also. He tells Jung-ho about Chief Prosecutor Kim easily handing the evidence to his own son.

Confirming from his own father, Jung-ho walks out in disappointment. President Lee announces to the press he is the whistleblower, and that the chairman and his brother-in-law are the ones at fault for leaving out evidence.

Yu-ri finds Jung-ho, and he apologizes for acting like he knows everything. Walking toward each other on the road, a fast car approaches.

The Law Cafe Episode 9 Musings

Betting on something one is unsure of or has no knowledge of is truly dangerous. Likewise, trusting someone spewing baseless assumptions brings the same danger.

Though these risks can be foreseen, in the end, the person at fault is always the wrongdoer, never the victim.

Fraud has been the focus of this episode, and it teaches lessons about today’s financial market as well as nurturing human relations.

A dramatic push and pull for the romance aspect of the drama can also be witnessed with cheesy lines from Jung-ho who is being pushed away. Moreover, the situation also gets lighter with their satirical portrayal of Woo-jin jumping in front of Yu-ri with the background music from Gummy’s You are my everything.

Another danger awaits Yu-ri and Jung-ho as a fast car approaches them by the end of the episode. Jung-ho’s attempt to bring reform by exposing his father appears to necessitate more efforts in taking down a whole empire.
