The Spies Who Loved Me Episode 3 Key Moments
Sophie’s Secret
Ah reum mourns on Sophie’s death while Ji-hoon’s boss helps clean up the mess after losing their informant.
Sophie and her friend wonder why her death was reported to be a drug overdose when she is a renowned scientist.
The same news reaches Jihoon’s camp and Sophie’s instigated death reason is said to be to protect the country. It will definitely put the country on a bad light if the lead scientist is selling top-notch intel so the intelligence service wants it to be covered up.
Team Interpol huddles to discuss Sophie’s connection based on their maknae Young-gu’s research. Their starting point is Sophie’s connection to industrial espionage.
Director Ban targets to unearth her secrets just as Ah-reum also deduced that Sophie had a big secret that caused her dear life.
Ah reum and Doo rae also analyze the cryptic case of Sophie’s death.
Both camps have eyed to start their probing by tracing the funds of Sophie’s start up business and they sense something suspicious about Sophie’s groom and a supposed stalker.
But, the key point of the investigation for Team Interpol is Ah-reum, Sophie’s close friend.
Doo-rae was also flabbergasted learning Ah reum’s encounter with Jihoon at Jeju island. Even more when she heard his sweaty sheriff stint.
Ah Reum’s Dream Husband
Rubbing salt to Ji-hoon’s wound, the team awed at Ah-reum’s new husband’s qualifications then Director Ban gave Ji-hoon a new assignment to investigate his ex-wife since she is the prime suspect of Sophie’s murder case.
Attesting he was with Ah-reum all night and Director Ban’s deduction is futile, Ji-hoon opts not to take the assignment.
Reminding them about Sophie’s intention to have Ji-hoon meet someone from Helmes on the night of the bachelorette party to give the intel about EcoSun, Director Ban insists on pinning the suspicion to Ah-reum.
Leveraging the risk of Ah-reum still eventually turning up in the investigation, Ji-hoon is left with no choice but to admit that he can’t do the task because his ex-wife hates him.
Still, he ends up getting the mission with their brainy maknae who is excited on his first ever field work.
Sophie’s Dying Message
Still brooding about Sophie’s case, Doo-rae leads a crucial clue by asking Ah-reum about her last conversation with Sophie. She said “not to trust the person next to her”.
Meanwhile, Peter desperately tries to find a clue about his beloved Sophie’s death. Seora also visits the crime scene to investigate. She also discovered that CCTV was broken that day.
Learning from Ji-hoon that Ah-reum never found out his true profession, Young-gu comments how dumb she could be. But his senior stops his further talk about his ex-wife.
Marveling at Ah-reum’s office building, Ji-hoon makes a statement of not having any lingering feelings with her, but hides quick when he spots her leaving from work.
While driving, Ah-reum answers her husband’s call and voices out her concern about Sophie’s death. Derek reassures her to not worry about it. Switching gear, Derek answers a call from an acquaintance which seems shady.
Operation Stalk Ah-reum
Meeting her next client Kim Dong-ran (Lee Joo Woo), a love child of a rich household who contends with her brother in their family business, she was surprised to hear a nonsense blab from her. When Dong-ran heard Derek is friends with her brother. She tells Ah-reum that her brother’s friends are not normal and he only hangs out with psychopaths.
Going on his business, Ji-hoon visits Ah-reum’s shop and makes an excuse of reading the news report about Sophie’s death. Ah-reum tells Ji-hoon how something’s weird about her friend’s death. Fishing more information, Ji-hoon learns from Ah-reum the details of her last conversation with Sophie.
Something adds up when Ji-hoon learns that Sophie introduced Ah-reum and Derek, and that her ex-wife’s new husband was also invited in the wedding.
Learning Ji-hoon will be staying in Seoul for his book, Ah-reum’s blood pressure take a notch when he asked to borrow money from her. While she went out to assist a customer, Derek arrives and sees Ji-hoon in the dressing room.
Spy Husbands’ Dressing Room Meeting
Derek and Ji-hoon casually chat about military service and neck tie, but seemingly aware of what they are to each other. Upon knowing Derek arrived and is waiting in the dressing room, Ah-reum and Doo-rae rush to check if chaos ensued.
They find Derek waiting alone while alertly checking if Ji-hoon is hiding somewhere. Refusing a dinner with Ah-reum, Derek heads to his hideout, checks on Ji-hoon’s book and confirms his suspicion. Releasing his steam as well, Ji-hoon goes to a shooting range and learns from the owner that Ah-reum frequently goes there.
Still tracing Sophie’s cause of death, Ji-hoon and Young-gu meet an acquaintance of hers who spilled all the strange directives to the researchers after the lead scientist’s death.
Incidentally, Ah-reum was able to scoop some dubious details surrounding her friend’s death from the same person Ji-hoon approached as a head hunter. Noticing Ah-reum disappeared, Ji-hoon tracks where she is in time for her limping appearance trying to chase after a masked man, who was at Sophie’s house.
Unfortunately, Ji-hoon failed to catch up with the culprit while Derek receives a news involving his wife. She also lies to him that she is in a meeting.
The Spies Who Loved Me Episodes 3 Musings
Giving away Ji-hoon’s still deep-rooted penchant for his ex-wife, we know he still likes her even when he claimed otherwise. He subconsciously reminisces his memories about her as well which goes to show his familiarity to her.
Also, I’m not into technical stuff when it comes to reviewing, but the picture quality of The Spies Who Loved Me is really on a film scale in terms of sharpness and vibrancy. I have been watching dramas on iQIYI, but this series so far gives really nice screencaps.
Spy stories give you those moments of bewilderment when you know you are sure, but then doubt it because of how free the plot can twist in the story. So, I won’t be so cheeky to comment yet until the big picture is really 75% sure and we can rely on our kdramaland experience to complete the big picture.

Definitely the confrontations of the two husbands would be something to look forward in the series. Two smart and territorial men vying for the heart of one woman sounds cliche in our world, but it always sells.
Helmes (I’m still waiting if this is in reference to greek god Hermes) is aligned to drop more details about it soon. Pondering on its romance story and the rate of how the spy elements are intertwining in the narrative, I’m worried I might not get enough of it. I just feel like there’s a lot of mysteries to solve. But who knows? Dear drama, feel free to surprise me.
Memorable Quote
“I feel safe and secure when I am wearing a necktie. Especially when my wife ties it for me. When she looks at me to tie it for me. It’s like watching her kiss me. It brings me great joy.” – Derek Hyun
