Scholar Ha gives a ring to Cheon Gi as a sign of love before he undergoes an inspection in the latest episode of Lovers of the Red Sky.

With the strong force that affected the people at the Gyeongwon Pavillion, Prince Yangmyeong is digging about the secret behind the burned King’s portrait. He becomes more dedicated to the restoration of the King’s portrait, and also urges Scholar Ha to undergo an inspection. Scholar Ha, masked as Ilwolseong, discovers and confirms that a demon resides within him at his meeting with Prince Joohyang.

Lovers of the Red Sky Episode 9 Key Moments

“You’re berating me. It’s like saving a drowning man then getting sued for losing a bag.”

Injuring the people around the pavilion including Prince Yangmyeong, the demon inside Scholar Ha walks towards Cheon Gi, and strangles her. However, the white tiger comes to intervene, which brings Scholar Ha unconscious the rest of the night. Cheon Gi nurses Scholar Ha the whole night, and in the morning she retells what she has witnessed that night. Scholar Ha claims not to have remembered anything, and starts to research the details about the demon through Moo Young.

“When you draw a portrait, you should start by taking your subject into your heart.”

Prince Yangmyeong begins to connect the incidents he has witnessed ever since the rainmaking ritual. With the conclusion he has drawn based on the recent events, he expresses his curiosity about what happened to the King. In response, the King reveals the secret about the burned portrait of King Youngjong.

Hearing the revelation from the King, Prince Yangmyeong becomes more determined in training Cheon Gi as a divine painter. Meanwhile, Cheon Gi comes back to her father and informs him about her assignment of drawing the King’s portrait. Her calm father suddenly panics, and warns her to never draw the portrait.

“Must you go through a sudden misfortune to come to your senses?”

Scholar Ha brings Cheon Gi to Im Chang Hyun who specializes in reading faces after hearing that she is having a hard time in understanding physiognomy. In there, she learns about what shapes of facial features mean, and also sees Jung Seon Rye who comes as a customer.

Waiting outside for Scholar Ha, Cheon Gi fights the gatekeeper for his maltreatment of the poor mother with a blind son. Angering the gatekeeper with her intervention, Scholar Ha comes to the rescue in stopping the rude gatekeeper.

“That’s what you do when you fly a kite to prevent misfortune so that the kite flies away with all possible bad luck.”

After their session with the physiognomist, Scholar Ha and Cheon Gi walk together, and Cheon Gi sees kites. She and Scholar Ha come to fly kites, and they enjoy their time together with their kites above in the sky.

As the kite string of Scholar Ha snaps, Cheon Gi justifies the situation by seeing it as a sign of driving away from the bad luck. Scholar Ha informs Cheon Gi of his incoming inspection, and tells her not to worry about being missing for several days. He hands Cheon Gi a jade ring that her mother owned, and tells her that he’s giving her the ring because he loves her.

“That is, you must throw away something that you cherish in order to move forward.”

Prince Joohyang comes to meet Ilwolseong, and they play the game Go. Scholar Ha, masked as Ilwolseong, suggests to the Prince that he must take down his rival. He continues by saying that winning in the game necessitates taking a risk. The Prince interprets what he said as a go signal on getting rid of Prince Yangmyeong. Unknown to the Prince, Scholar Ha purposefully fuels the greed of the Prince as revenge on the royal family.

“The former King once said that the world is always precarious, and the throne can never be eternal.”

In return for the wise words of Ilwolseong, Prince Joohyang answers Ilwolseong’s query of what a demon is. He elaborates about the power that the demon holds, and shares that the demon resides in the body of Scholar Ha. Hearing that as Ilwolseong, Scholar Ha confirms to himself that a demon resides inside him.

Meanwhile, Prince Yangmyeong confirms to Cheon Gi about her father being a divine painter in the past. She hears about how her father went mad after sealing the demon inside the portrait of King Youngjong. The King who came to visit also directly confirms to her the information about the demon that needs to be sealed.

Lovers of the Red Sky Episode 9 Musings

With the recent incident in the pavilion, more people including Ha Ram himself becomes aware of the demonic energy that comes out of him. Prince Yangmyeong as the person assigned in the restoration of the burned portrait starts to also see the real urgency of the restoration. Moreover, he sees this as a chance also to separate Scholar Ha from Cheon Gi. 

Scholar Ha appreciates how Cheon Gi still has the handkerchief he lent her when they were young. At present, he now officially professes his love for her with a jade ring. Their romance is starting to have notable progress, and although we may enjoy these sweet moments, we shall also expect the incoming obstructions to their sweet romance.

Bringing Cheon Gi to the physiognomist is also a sweet gesture from Scholar Ha. He makes sure to support Cheon Gi in her career as a painter, and also protect her from people who would harm her. Truly, Ha Ram’s innocence radiates while looking out for Cheon Gi and loving her deeply.

Meeting with Prince Joohyang, and the Prince’s greed is Scholar Ha’s form of revenge. Even though all those are just his plot of revenge, it may bring him danger as he is handling fire with fire. It also poses the question of whether he will enjoy the aftereffects of his revenge, given that everything that involves the royal family can also affect Cheon Gi, the woman he loves.

As Prince Yangmyeong is now aware of the whole secret of the burned portrait and the demon, he has more authority in advising Scholar Ha to stay away from Cheon Gi. However, it’s not like he could win Cheon Gi’s affection by separating her from Scholar Ha.
