The killer is finally revealed in the eight episode of OCN’s Train!
The official chase to cuff the merciless murderer in two parallel worlds officially begins. And let’s pray Seo Do Won (Yoon Shi Yoon) has the mental and emotional fortitude to outwit the smart killer on his end game. After all, if Train is a chess game, he is close to losing all his pawns against the villain.
“I didn’t shoot him in self-defense.”
It turns out that Inspector Seo has returned to his world and made the phone call to Do Won from the office.
Lee Sung Wook survives the fall, but is still.in critical condition. Chief Oh meets the team to get the report of what happened during the chase.
Do Won covers for Seo Kyung and explains that she shot the culprit out of self-defense. Chief Oh talks to Do Won in private and he reveals that the real killer is still on the loose, and that Sung Wook is only an accomplice.
“I came back to my world.”
Chief Oh tells him to leave the case and go to where his dying father is before it is too late.
Rushing to the medical center, Do Won goes to get the car, but was dragged by Inspector Seo, who announced his return.
Their conversation gets interrupted by the junior officer who makes a report about Sung Wook’s condition.
The two Do Wons continue their chat in the train tracks. Inspector Seo urges him to go back to his world, but Do Won refuses.
Taking his arm, he points how a junkie like him won’t be able to catch the culprit. Engaging to a heated argument, Inspector Seo pines on how he was a coward opting to protect Seo Kyung than revealing the truth in his world.
He rubs salt to his pain by adding how he has saved his father when he didn’t. He even ended up not saving anyone. Inspector Seo promises to save the culprit before his father dies.
“I maybe a piece of trash, but I saved everyone.”
Inspector Seo’s biting words ring on Do Won’s thoughts. Back at the station, the team is on a dead end, unable to trace the person Sung Wook frequently calls.
Do Won visits Inspector Seo’s father with Seo Kyung to finally make amends, now that the truth is out.
From what Inspector Seo told him, Do Won tells Seo Kyung that there’s another person aside from Sung Wook they need to investigate. Thus, they need to investigate the people around Sung Wook, 12 years ago.
Seo Kyung suggests hypnosis to retrieve the memories lost of Inspector Seo’s father. When his father agrees, she phoned the doctor who has been treating her.
“You’re the reason why the punk won’t leave.”
Thinking she saw Do Won when she went inside the station, Seo Kyung follows him to the evidence storage room.
Inspector Seo finally meets her and mutters she’s the reason why someone he knows does not want to leave.
On the day Inspector Seo’s father underwent a hypnosis, he remembered seeing a pill bottle which is not listed in the evidence. At that same moment, Inspector Seo also learns about a pill taken by people diagnosed with Huntington’s disease which he believed is taken by the killer.
Having around 100 patients in the country easily helps in narrowing down the culprit. He orders the doctor to research about it.
“I can’t remember anything except from the one I said earlier.”
Dr. Min Joon assists Inspector Seo’s father and presents Seo Kyung’s jewelry box to try to make him remember. Finally realizing the same doctor is the culprit, Seo aboji tries to sound the alarm, but was seen by Min Joon who later sedated him to a deep sleep.
Do Won and Seo Kyung head to see Sung Wook who regains consciousness. Inspector Seo also called Do Won to return back to his world since it will rain that night.
The doctor informs them that Sung Wook might have incurred cognitive issues caused by mental trauma. Thinking about Sung Wook in his world his head aches.
Moon Jin goes back to silence Inspector Seo, but as he preps to give him a needle shot, his nerves act out. Seo aboji runs to escape just as the two Do Wons learn he vanished.
Inspector Seo sees his father running in the pouring rain and hurries to save him. But unfortunately he failed to save him and was also hit by the car.
Do Won arrives and finds the father and son in a bloody mess, just like how his past memory in his world unfold.
Episode 8 Afterthoughts
I was about to criticize the show for the easy reveal of the real killer, but I did not expect that harrowing last frame scene.
As seen in the next episode’s teaser, Do Won makes a decision to stay and catch the culprit. How he would pin Min Joon’s crime would be the highlight of the last four episodes.
I am curious if he will just stay in B world and assume Inspector Seo’s identity. I also want to know what Min Joon’s counterpart is like in A world, and if he will show up in the last episodes.
Train cushions its intricate plot through the clear perspectives of the character. Going for less drama and more thinking, just like how cop story should be, is also one of its strength.
Yoon Shi Yoon efficiently differentiates the two roles with conviction anchoring the heroes’ journeys narrated in the series.
Down to the last stop of Train, we should expect the reason for the culprit’s killings. By now also, we should have accepted that the portal between the two worlds will not be elaborated. That rain on the train tracks suffice the crosser to cross the other world.
Whether they will give additional details, we gladly welcome. More than that, we hope to see a gratifying ending for the hero of the story.
