Director Lee Chang-dong Makes Long-Awaited Return with Star-Studded Netflix Film

After nearly a decade away from the director’s chair, internationally acclaimed auteur Lee Chang-dong makes his highly anticipated return to cinema with Possible Love (WT), currently in production for Netflix.

Known for his deeply humanistic storytelling and unflinching portrayals of emotional and societal tension, Lee’s new film is already generating buzz for its compelling premise, powerhouse ensemble, and meaningful reunions with frequent collaborators.

At the heart of Possible Love (WT) are the intertwined lives of two married couples, each navigating starkly different realities. But when their paths unexpectedly cross, the illusion of stability begins to unravel, revealing quiet discontent, unspoken desires, and the fragility of the human experience. Through these characters, the film sets out to explore the emotional fault lines that can exist even in the most seemingly secure relationships.

Jeon Do Yeon (Kill Boksoon, Revolver) leads the cast as Mi-ok, reuniting with Lee Chang-dong nearly two decades after her award-winning performance in Secret Sunshine, which earned her the Best Actress Award at the 60th Cannes Film Festival. Starring opposite her once again is Sul Kyung Gu (A Normal Family, The Merciless, Idol), who plays her husband, Ho-seok. This marks their fourth collaboration following I Wish I Had a Wife, Birthday, and Kill Boksoon, reinforcing a long-standing screen partnership that brings emotional nuance and authenticity to their roles.

The film also features Jo In Sung (Moving, Escape from Mogadishu) and Cho Yeo Jeong (Parasite, Hidden Face) as Sang-woo and Ye-ji, the second couple whose presence shifts the dynamics of the story. Cho, globally recognized for her role in Parasite—which won the SAG Award for Best Ensemble Cast—adds another layer of complexity to the project with her sharp emotional range.

In addition to the stellar cast, Possible Love (WT) reunites Lee with screenwriter Oh Jung-mi, co-writer of Burning, one of Lee’s most critically lauded works. The film is produced by Pinehouse Film, which also backed Burning, further strengthening the creative team behind this new chapter in Lee’s filmography.

Lee Chang-dong’s career is marked by a string of internationally celebrated works, including Green Fish, Oasis, Secret Sunshine, Poetry, and Burning. Known for crafting stories that resonate across borders while reflecting the unique complexities of Korean society, Lee has garnered numerous accolades: the Silver Lion for Best Director at Venice for Oasis, Best Screenplay at Cannes for Poetry, and the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes for Burning, which was also shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best International Feature.

With Possible Love (WT), Lee continues his signature exploration of life’s quiet ruptures—this time through the lens of love, dissatisfaction, and the unspoken emotional tremors that echo through marriage and intimacy. It’s a film that promises not only layered characters and poignant storytelling but also an introspective look at the human condition.

As production continues, anticipation builds for what may be one of the most thought-provoking and emotionally resonant Korean films of the year.

Stay tuned—Possible Love is coming soon, only on Netflix.
